Sorry Andrew, I misled you - must be old age. Let me tell it correctly this time.
I used to tow a 2001 Elddis Whirlwind with a Golf Estate 1.9TDI, and used a Bulldog blade type stabiliser. I changed the van tow hitch to a Winterhoff coupling and the improvement in stability was readily obvious. Then I changed my car, still pulling the same van, with equally good stability. This year I changed my van to a Coachman Pastiche (330 kg heavier MPTLM). The Winterhoff was moved over to my new van, and stability is again excellent.
It wasn't a dumb question; ha job to follow my own posting when I re-read it. Hope this clears the unintended fog.
