Sorry for all my questions as we are trying to buy a van and upgrade from our tent.  I've read all your comments and taken everything on board, this forum is now my bible!!  But I'm now worried that our Mondeo 1.8 Petrol Estate is not up for the job, its on a 02 plate.

Help, we feel like we never gonna get a van cause of our price range of £2500 and now the car looks like we can't pull with it ;-(

The vans I've looked at are between 1000-1250 mlw.  Do you think our car is up to this, I've checked the kerb weight for our car and this falls below the 85% recommended towing weight of our car.  As you can imagine first time towing is gonna be daunting for us, especially when I can't find a van to buy, ha ha!

Thanks for reply x

Hi, I have a 52 plate mondeo 2.0 tdci 130ps (makes all the difference lol)

its max weight is 1475kg and will tow upto 1250kg ish

I think the estates are slightly heavier so i would look at anything upto 1250kg as being within 85% capacity.... hope this helps

altho my car has more torque being deiesel I am sure you would be ok

if wrong then someone will correct me i am sure.

we tow with a 1999 plate 2ltr petrol 16 valve mondeo no major problems just be prepared to use the engine revs and gear box a lot more than in normal driving
Ours is a hatch back so towing weight is slightly lower than an estate ,still leaves a very large choice of vans we can tow

Wellllllllll with the wife looking at the speedo of our Citroen C5 2 Litre Diesel with the glaring power of a hawk, I dare not go above the 60 mph limit but, having said that, the C5 maintains 60mph without any probs on the strait and some the gentle inclines.  If those motorway inclines are a little steeper....... I drop down to 4th for a little while till the top of the incline then back up to 5th.  I think the car would go up to 70 mph in some places but but but tis a little scary if I take her any fast than 65mph.  When I say 'take her any faster than 65mph...... I did mean the car and not the wife bless her heart.
