Its actually legal if you pay the tax on it!!!

I think many can but you have to do a mix of diesel and oil 50/50 at most I think. Google it bet you get some helpful website and remember to pay your tax on it!!!

Hi hgv driver - I was really interested in running car off chip fat too after watching that programme - think it is madness to be charged VAT on something that VAT has already been paid on though - this stuff would be going in a landfill otherwise!!

On another note my hubbie is thinking of changing jobs and becoming hgv driver would you recommend it or give it a wide berth?

If you go to the actual mfrs of the engines you will find that most diesel cars will take veg.oil certain mfrs have this is mind when making, others it is a matter of changing the filters. The dealership are not up to date with this. read up on biodiesel and you will find all the info you require. My 99 C15 is running lovely on a 50/50 mix. my son runs his peugot van completely on veg oil, plus his rover 45 W reg. no problems and has been doing so for a long time.

Hope no C & E are out there reading these threads!

The handbook for my VW Touran details the use of RME fuel (biodiesel).  This says it must correspond to DIN EN 590 and have a cetane number of at least 51.  The cetane number indicates the ignition quality.

It says RME fuels can damage fuel systems in vehicles not suitable for it, and says to only use such fuels which are DIN EN 14214(FAME) compliant.    Also, if you plan not to use vehicle for approx. 2 weeks, fill with diesel and drive approx. 50 km. to prevent damage to fuel injection system.

Also, performance may be slightly lower, and fuel consumption slightly higher.

Seems hardly worth all the attendant risks.  I'll stick coventional diesel.

Bertie.

Sorry, but if it is so good, why are there so many companies blasting away cash in order to come up with reliable engine compliant bio-diesels?  Chip fat? - 'aving a larff aren't they?

I assume that the thread titled Bio-Diesel which has just been terminated and that I asked a question on, has been closed because of this similar one.

It would have been a good idea and helpful to me if words to that effect were posted on here!

Thank you.

Hi, I was running our Peugeot 406 1.9td on a 50/50 mix of veg oil and diesel. The veg oil was costing me 1.50 for 3 litre. I made no modifications to the car, just put 12 litres of diesel in and 12 litre of veg oil. The car loved it, ran quieter, smoother and better on performance and economy. The down side is you have to register and obtain a license as a fuel producer then pay the excise duty on the oil you use. Also you have to pay VAT on the veg oil because you have changed its use from food stuff to fuel. By the time you’ve paid the duty and VAT it was costing more than buying Diesel at the pump, unless you lied about how much Veg oil you were using and we wouln't do that would we. I no longer use veg oil now I only use diesel and have de registered. However if you are prepared to use used cooking oil from your local chippy and filter it then you can make savings, but I can’t be bothered with all the filtering etc.
Dave.
