Im confused by what i can tow, any information will be gratefully recieved. I am looking at a bailey Ranger with a fully loaded weight of 1184Kg. I will be towing it with a BMW320 estate with a kerb weight of 1520Kg, this makes 2704kg. The Bmw book also says that the permissible gross weight is 1985kg which makes 3169kg. Both of theses are below the 3.5T limit and the car weighs more than the van, does this make it legal for me to tow on a cat B licence???

In short, Yes as long as the van weighs not more than the kerb weight of the vehicle, and the combined train weight (ie car and van combined, and loaded) is not more than 3500Kgs you are ok

agree with tim on this one. if you have had your license before the change over (about '96) you can drive train weight upto 3500.

Just noticed several threads on here abut licences and weights and car caravan match.  Why can't someone make it really simple so we can all understand it.  I get confused as well.

Happiness, the crucial date is 1st January 1997. I think you meant to say that it is after this date that you are restricted to 3500 Kg - those who passed their test prior to this date have what they call "Grandfather rights" i.e. they keep the entitlement to drive larger vehicles, up to 7500 Kgs.
