When we first started we towed a 10 foot long 4 berth Ace with a Cavalier 1600.

I used to tow a 2 berth Compass Shadow with a 1.4 Honda Civic.

I've towed a heavy (850Kg) folding camper with my 1.4 Honda Jazz.

As long as you stick to manufacturers towing limits and the 85% weight recommendation all should be fine.

I tow a swift Classic Corvette 4 berth (just under 1100 kg i think) with a Zaffira 1.6 petrol and have to be careful how i load the weight. Most of the heavy stuff goes in the car but i tow quite comfortably most of the time. As state above have to plan ahead with gears but not had major problems. Must admit tho when funds allow will be changing up to a 1.9+ diesel just to be safe.

I just had my first outing this week and i tow a Fleetwood colchester 5 berth 1992 890 unladen 1130 laden with a Zafira 1.6 which has a max tow of 1100 that is not mentioned once in the manual of the car just 3120 GTW so i just load it carefull.

The car towed much better than i expected just had to work the gears a bit on steep hills but expected that with 5 people in the car.

Info given to me by Towsafe when we purchased our van if any help to you, i drive a 2005 1.6 petrol zafira. As my van is 915 unladen and i am careful what i put in the van when towing i am safe.

kerb weight 1338 kg, nose weight 75 kg, max tow 1100 kg, unbraked max tow 600kg, gross 1970 kg, train 3070 kg, d value 6.92 kn

as you say early gear selection is needed but other than that is quite an easy tow. We are looking at changing the car.
