A bit of a technical question from a newer member but an experienced caravanner. We are possibly looking to get a bigger van in next 18 months or so and will also have to upgrade towcar to pull it. We have done lots of research on towcars and like the look of the Sorento. Gets rave reviews, good kerbside weight etc. I have a mate who drives one, also experienced caravanner and loves it. We are torn between the 2.5 diesel, or going along the route of the 3500 petrol with an LPG conversion - this would satisfy our consience with emissions etc. Appreciate the weights are the same on paper, but has anyone experience of dragging along a van with Lpg, do you lose  / gain any torque over the diesel version, is there anything else I need to look at (other than planning fuel stops very carefully), and if the lack of emissions from Lpg affects the VEL duty payable. The Sorento is heavy in the emissions dept. !!

Hi Dave, were on our 2nd LPG disco and absolutley love it-all the power and speed of a V8 at 40p a litre.  Weve pulled a Senator Oklahoma all over the South, and France and havnt noticed any discernable power loss.  This summer we went from North Hampshire to the Vendee on 3 tanks-about £60 and the 3rd tankfull lasted till we were ready to come home.

Regards Neil

I believe the road tax is £5 a year cheaper with lpg, never got round to informing the dvla that mine had been converted, so I still pay the extra. My choice would be the LPG over the diesel everytime. Even given the bottom end torque of the diesel which is lacking on the petrol engine, the extra 1000cc would make it a much more powerful tool, especially as the petrol engines tend to give more power per cc than their diesel counterparts. You will probably find you need to change gear more with the lpg / petrol engine than you would with the diesel, but thats a small price to pay.

You can have a diesel engine converted, but it is more expensive than converting a petrol and does still use some diesel while running. It is not common practice due to the increased convertion costs and the savings to be made are less than those from converting a petrol, therefore, most people change to a petrol engine and convert that, but it is possible if you wanted to convert the diesel engine.

Are there still grants to convert to lpg available?
