I have a Nissan X-Trail Sport and haven't yet had a towbar fitted.  There are all kinds, including detachable, swan neck, flange, etc and it has to be said that some look better than others.  I live near Chorley, Lancashire.  Can anyone recommend a particular fitter or type of towbar, or even where I can see different styles to make an informed choice.  I have a new caravan on order to be collected in February 2007, so I'm not in a big rush yet.

I would go with a detachable, saves a lot of grief with the bruised shins and greasy trousers.  Brink and Witter are good brands but I'm sure there are many others. We have a Brink. The detachables are swan-neck type, which is what you will need if your new van is fitted with an Alko stabiliser.

I've got a Bosal "fixed" swan-neck.(Use to have a detachable, but changed to "fixed" after it developed a fault, and allowed some movement). Based in Preston!

I looked at all the swan neck and detachable bars when I had my X-trail but opted for a Witter with an alko ball for the stabiliser.

Witter detachable on my Galaxy and a custom made one on the Elgrand. Wish I could have got another Witter detachable for the Elgrand, but not available.

I have the cheaper no-names brand on my car, still conforms to currant standards, does anyone know if there are any actual differances in a no-name one and say bosal or witter, or is it just brand names that cost the extra £40 (in my case)

As long as they conform to EU standards it makes no difference,

The only thing to watch for is the noseweight that the towbar is capable of carrying.

Unless you can see two towbars side by side it is difficult to answer. However, generally in this life you get what you pay for. I am not saying a cheaper towbar would not do its job but companies like Witter do a lot of research and built substantial bits of kit. Just had a Witter put on my new Sorento.

Really know nothing about the pros and cons but when we had difficulty, Witter was extremely good and quick at sorting out problems and offering help. Can't fault the service, best I've known from any company for quite some time.

I have a detachable Brink on my car.Love it's ease  of use,and the tidy rear when it's removed.

Has towed many different trailers without problems.
