I tow with a 2004 Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4-D 5 door hatchback, and its not great.

The 2.0 diesel that I have has less power (113 bhp) than the 2.2 and you feel it. It has no grunt at all under 2000 rpm, and if you have to rev it into the power band to get things moving, and that strains the clutch. I burnt out my clutch trying to reverse my van up hill on a sloping site.  Luckily its a company car and I got a new clutch free of charge, but the downside is I cant change to a better towcar until the end of the 3 year lease.

The 2.2 might be better in this respect, but I havent driven one. You still have the issue that they are quite light cars with a relatively low max tow weight (1300KG). My car has a kerbweight of 1353Kg and my van has an MTPLM of 1290Kg, which gives me about a 93% match. Not ideal, and when towing I have to be careful because you can feel the tail wagging the dog so to speak. Also, with a max noseweight of 75Kg, I have to load the van bob on becasue this is less than 7% of 1290Kg.

You will probably have the same weight issues because a van of 520 length will have a simlar MTPLM to my 1290Kg.

That said, apart from towing, as a normal family car it's been very good.
