Hi,

What are your thoughts on towing with an automatic? My dad is about to buy a new car, he has the chance of a Vauxhall Omega 2lt estate but its automatic.

We've spoke to 2 people about it and had 2 different responses.

Ones said-' brilliant because your always in the right gear'

The other-' terrible as it burns the clutch out fast'

Help- the cars being held until this afternoon for him.

First, there is no clutch on a fully automatic car.  But it is sometimes necessary to have an oil cooler fitted for the automatic gearbox.

The car handbook should give full advice on the requirements, and the trailer weight, etc.

I know several people who tow with an automatic, and would not change.   Generally, an automatic uses a bit more fuel than a manual-change gearbox.

If he is not buying from a Vauxhall dealership, get him to have the car held on the proviso that its towing ability suits his caravan.  Be prepared for the cost of having an oil cooler fitted. Sorry, but have no idea of cost.

Bertie.

First check if there is a requirement for additional gearbox cooling.

I prefer an automatic gearbox and find it much more relaxed and convenient than manual,

Further to that Autos are generally more reliable than manual boxes and torque converters are much more reliable than clutches.

We have been driving only automatics since 1971, would never buy a manual.  Automatics are great for towing.
