Hi all
I am looking out for a new tow car and do fancy the passat 130 tdi around 53 or 04 plate . Has anybody got any experience towing with the above car either in the se form or the sport form also cant make my mind up if to go for the saloon or the estate all your views would be nice.
Will the back end on the saloon model drop to much with the van on the back my van is 1429 max weight but we would never be anywhere near that as there is only 2 of us and we travel light i would think we would never be any heavier than 1375 max.

Find your car here and check out the weights

http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/volkswagen.htm

I did have a passat estate tdi 130bhp. It was a 2001 model with a kerbweight of around 1420kg which was a good match for my then van which had a mtplm of around 1200kg. So a good match and it towed well.

The more recent Passats seem to be a good bit heavier.

Hi Dazkim

I have towed with a 130PS Passat 1.9dti S trim for three years.  I have had no trouble towing a Compass Corona 534, in respect of either weight or power. We have done 3000 miles from UK to France, Germany, Luxembourg and Holland. As well as various holidays in U.K.

The mid-range torque is superb as is motorway cruising.  Overall the MPG is very good, both towing and solo.  I have no criticisms of the Passat at all. Be careful of the suspension in the Sport version as it is lowered and will run the risk of "bottoming out" under a van of your weight.

I have mine for sale now [ July 03 Registered, 42000 miles] while awaiting delivery of a new Passat Estate 2.0 Tdi 140ps.

Hi there

We have Passat 1.9tdi 4motion sport estate and it is well on top of the job towing our little Elddis Force 2 but we took my parents Swift Challenger 470 to their new home in Devon (from Derbyshire), it was a journey I would not like to repeat, although the car didn't bottom out on the suspension the ride was very firm and we were thankful when we unhitched the van, so I would be wary of going for the sport version if I were you.

Hi

Thanks for you reply but i thought the stiffer the suspension like on the sport model would be better than the softer suspension on the se model when towing the van.

Hi Dazkim

We thought the sport would have been better for towing with the stiffer suspension but our  previous passat estate (1996 Tdi cl) was a far more comfortable drive towing a larger caravan than our present car and it didn't sit right down on the rear suspension whilst towing either.

Cheers

Hi Walter.  What price would you be likely to want for a private sale ?

I own a Passat 130 Tdi Sport and have been towing with it for the last 2 years . It copes with our Pennine pathfinder with no probs what so ever , the torque from low revs makes it a great tow car . It always feels stable and regularly returns close to 40 mpg fully loaded and with 3 bikes on the roof . It is however a little low and you have to watch the speed bumps on sites when loaded and i also have to take the jockey wheel off as it can ground quite easily . Pretty sure you can get a bracket to raise the hitch height if this is a big problem . Ours is a 2001 Y and has been totally reliable over the 3 years we have owned it but i am getting itchy feet and thinking of a change , trouble is it will be a hard act to follow .

Hi the 130 tdi will pull your van ok. I have the old 110 bhp se 1999 Saloon and currently pull a 6 berth 1300+ as it is usually full to the max and i have no problems. I fitted a pair of spring assisters to the rear springs to reduse the sag on the rear of the car but only through choise it was fine without them (cost £24.00 and took 5 min to fit)
