I am toying with the idea of buying an automatic one. Has anyone got anything good or bad to say about them and their towing and general towing capabilities?

Thanks

Thanks snowy, I had read the parkers reports, and the what car reports looked similar.

Just wanted first hand reports from ukcs members.

The Merc is a long story. If you have a few hours to spare drop me an email and I will bore you with the details!

Hi Jeepster,

You have to be very carefull with non 4x4 mags as their reports on 4x4 are usualy crap. They do not understand 4x4's and try and compare them to cars. For a more balanced view look at 4x4 magazine or planet 4x4 etc.

Generally they are very good cars, a bit rough about the edges, but they are traditional offroaders so they will be. They are popular in australia, overall they are very good value for money, see a lot of them about.

Hi Jeepster,

I've got one.  It is the manual geared version and I have had it from last June.

Totally happy with it.  I did have a Passat Estate 1.9tdi previously and it was ok for towing the caravan but not a lot of good at towing a horse trailer with 2 horses!!!! So it had to go!

The Terracan takes all this in its stride. In fact I would go as far as to say it is probably happier towing than not towing! Anyway that said it is very comfortable and has plenty of room.

I have not worked out fuel consumption on towing alone but my overall average seems to return just short of 30mpg. Not bad for the size and weight of the beast.

Although there are some very favourable reviews there are also some that are not so kind but then I think these reviewers are just looking a fancy badge!! Go test one yourself and see.

Just ask if there is anything else you would like to know.

Thanks for the input so far.

I have more or less decieded not to get it after considering that I would only be using it to tow a few times a year. Will probably go for a large estate car instead.

I have owned a 4x4 in the past, so I do understand a little about them.

At the risk of the embarrassment of getting no replies!... can I ask if anyone owns a Hyundai Terracan Limited Edition with the roof mounted DVD Player?  I have just bought a 2004 model which does not have a door opening interior light!!  I have returned the car to the supplying garage and they told me that the Limited Edition version did not have a courtesy light - they had checked with the nearest main dealer. I was so incredulous that I telephoned Hyundai Customer Services who checked with their Technical Department and confirmed that this vehicle; a modern car with all the correct door triggering devices fitted does not have a courtesy light. Can anyone out there believe this?  I'm not sure that I would have bought the car had I known - talk about being kept in the dark!!!!     Chris
