Hi Does anyone tow with one of these and if so are they any good it is a 2003 model i am thinking of buying and my van weight is 1420 fully laden so it is ideal weight but just like to know how they tow.
We tow with a 2.2 tdi short wheelbase, 2000 reg. Tows fine but weve only had our Frontera 9 months paid £6000, and so much has had to be fixed, were thinking of selling it. It's been one thing after another. This is the most expensive car weve brought and this is the one weve spent the most money and time fixing.
Also most jobs need special dealer tools to fix the problem so you can't get them done cheaper. Two jobs have had to have Diagnostic Tests which cost £65 each and thats just to find out what the problem is.
Wouldn't recommend a Frontera, but this is only based on our experience.
That sounds like my old Frontera 2.2tdi Auto SWB 2000.Travelled on AA Relay Truck 3 times ,one electrical failure, next fuel pipe fell off taking the car to Cardiff after service by main Vauxhall Dealer,3rd time torque converter failed towing the van to the ferry at Dover. In addition to this ABS system failed in the Pyrenees and engine management stopped car getting above 40 .I am a super cautious person with cars and always have servicing done by dealers i used 2 Vauxhall dealers both rubbish.Dont be taken in by the comments that this car's faults are "caused by the owners" do a Google search for yourself.I was warned off this model by a mechanic friend but didnt listen. It is a very comfortable, cheap to run vehicle and there are some good ones out there but it is now an obsolete model. After the gearbox failure (just outside the warranty period) i took my friends advice and traded it in at a big loss. When i handed in the service and repair history(a very thick pack) with the car they thought it was joke.Hope you get lucky. There are two kinds of Frontera owner one the minority praises the car to the skies the other like me who most of the time bites his lip in embarassment at having bought one of these but occasional has to speak out
Had a frontera 2.2 16v. petrol, great car untill it started going wrong, then problem after problem after problem after problem. main dealers not much help, now drive a landrover disco, 300 tdi. tows great and wet fields no problem, last week reversed a twin axle van onto its pitch with the brakes locked on, no problem,
NO major Problems with mine, but maybe I'm just lucky?! ALL cars from ALL manufacturers suffer with problems. I should know after working at a major Japanese car firm for nearly 15 years, you would be suprised to see how many are "Off lined" with faults etc,etc before even touching the tarmac.
We are on our second Frontera 2.2dti, ours is a 53 reg Olympus, we have had from new. apart from some minor glitches it has been reliable and is a very god towcar.
It is comfortable and can do 28-30mpg towing our Bailey Pageant.
The low box is good for towing on muddy fields and manouevring the van. We have pulled a few vans and motorhomes off soft grass.
They are'nt too bad off road either although we have an old Range Rover for the serious stuff!
Dealers could be better sometimes1

Spot on that Dave. We too are on our second Frontera My first one Was a1996 2.2 lwb petrol It towed our old caravan with no problems at all. The only down side was the mpg on the annual run to Cornwall. I part chopped it last year for a 2004 2.2 Dti. That too towed our old caravan and more recently our new van with ease. Can't fault it at all.

Great value, comfortable and reasonably economical.
BUT
they do get a bit warm when going up hills - this maybe a sensor problem though as it it mentioned in various tech bulletins, in all the years the high temps have caused no other problems.
and they suffer niggly issues associated with leak off pipes and vacuum pipes. Get these sorted and then the car only suffers the same problems as any other recent diesel with Bosch electronics - MAF sensors and LuK dual mass flywheels!!
ours has done 120k, and has had a new fuel pump and dual mass flywheel...but tows well.
Hi all, I STILL run a lwb 2.3td that I admit is no sprint car, but it tows so well and over the last 5 years has only had a set of brake pads and shoes, exhaust and a engine stop solenoid but has always been serviced at 10,000 mls I must have been lucky? The mrs has a swb sport and neither have been any trouble, Though being a mechanic means I can keep them in good nick without any major cost, There are better towcars but for me and what they've cost I'm happy

Currently driving a 1999 2.2DTI LTD auto. Had it one year now.
Problems so far:
1 Intermittent AIR BAG warning light. Fixed by cutting out the plug under the drivers seat and soldering the wires together. Only a problem if you ever need to remove the drivers seat.
2 Air Con failed. Pipe that runs to the Condenser rubbed on the front cross member. (Wife had a low speed shunt two weeks prior to this occurring.)
3 Speedometer has an intermittent fault - see owners group listed in previous posts for more details, common failure.
4 Mine seems to go through a front set of brake pads in less than twelve months - had the brakes checked out ok.
5 Temperature gauge shoots up to 100 when pulling a van up a steep incline - No problem other than it doesn't instill you with confidence. Soon drops to normal as soon as you crest the hill.
Positives?
Good Stable tow. Can get the family and the van on/off really muddy fields with no drama if need be. High driving position allows good visibility of the road ahead. Cheap to buy, but buyer beware!
Seriously considering a similar age Shogun as a replacement.
We had the airbag problem, it had a new connector and pre-tensioner under warranty!
Also has a slight hiccup from the engine occasionally- like a small misfire! Had a new airmass meter under warranty, it is a known problem according to the owners group. Seems to be better on Shell diesel!
One set of pads and tyres in 3.5 years from new.
Otherwise a good everyday car which tows well.

i tow my coachman genius with my frontera 2.2 dti olympus 03 only done 30 000 miles but cant fault it on most roads you could easily forget you had the van on back on recent holiday to northumberland covering about 500 miles towing and 900 miles solo it averaged 32 mpg .it never flinches on hills and will pull off anywhere in the low box i personaly would not swap it for anything else it is very basic vehicle and is not fitted with many fancy gismos except a/c which suits me fine. the temp gauge has never gone above halfway .it also is very good for owd,uns to get in and out of.
