Hi!
Im quite new to camping but I'm going to shell island for 3nights (4 days) and don't have a clue what to cook so I've settled for bbq every night 😂
I have 2 cool bags but i dont think they will last even a full day.
which cool box would be best to keep my meat frozen and will it still be safe after a few days?😁 thank you!

If you've got a pitch with electric then an electric cool box should be adequate.
Should you not have electric then the type of cool box that you pack with ice would be best.

Hi I'm assuming no EHU...

There are some very good 5-day passive coolers out there, and they do work providing you prime them initially - and have access to a a freezer for icepacks or to buy ice.

Coleman Extreme coolers work well and, although not cheap, are less ££ than the effective and very covetable IceyTek and Yeti cool boxes. We had a large Coleman Extreme 5-day box which kept things really fresh but, with only 2 of us it was a bit large so I've replaced with a 3-day one. Still great, but not as much storage . There are 3 and 5 day versions - and the size varies - so make sure you have room for them.

If you search on here you will find lots of posts about keeping food fresh in a passive cooler but to save you looking, here's what I've learned:

Cool the box down before use 'prime' it: by freezing blocks or bottles of water and putting in the cooler for 24-48 hours before you go.

Put COLD things preferably into the cooler - or energy (cold) will be used up cooling them. I can't remember all the science!

If you use ice, don't empty the water as it melts - it helps to keep things cool.

Invesst in good freezer packs - and make use of onsite freezers (label your blocks).

You can freeze water bottles instead of blocks - and have nice cool water to drink at site. Ditto milk.

Freeze your food so it acts as a freezer block as well as edibles.

PUtting food in storage boxes is a good idea - helping prevent it getting wet with melting ice etc.

From a tip on here, I use bubble-wrap on top of the main food to fill out gaps but, also enable me to store salad veg without it becoming frozen and soggy yet remain chilled.

N.B. cold sinks... so put your blocks/frozen water bottles/frozen food on top.

Don't open it too much!

Maybe consider a different box for drinks which might be opened more frequqntly. If funds allow.

Hi,

I have the Anker Everfrost 40 Whilst not cheap is an excellent piece of Kit Whilst it states the battery last 39 hours, I have found it can last a lot longer with careful managment. I do have a Solar Panel which I can top up the battery. I also have an EV, so I can charge the battery from flat in about 4 hours if the weather does not support Solar charging.

We take it to BTCC at Thruxtion, and it lasts the Weekend (Thursday to Sunday), just using the occasional Solar to charge.

Cheers
Nathan

All mostly learned either from here or experience and happy to pass on. The Coleman Extreme will earn its keep as it'll be useful for home BBQs or even Christmas for drinks or food.

Enjoy your trip

What BridgeyWidge said.

Freeze and chill everything that goes in. Don’t leave the lid open. Don’t let the kids open it.

Also, for a non chilled dinner, a tin of M&S Chilli, a pouch of refried beans, a pack of tortilla wraps, some grated cheese and a mashed avocado: BURRITOS!

Have fun.

bridgeywidge knows her stuff, VERY good advice!

Beyond a 'proper' fridge of the 3-way (gas/mains/12v type) or a compressor fridge (12v and/or 240v mains type - but they have their restrictions in their own ways!), a top end coolbox with pre-chilled/frozen contents and icepacks/iceblocks is the way to go!

Electric 'coolboxes' of the thermoelectric/peltier (calling them a fridge should be a criminal offence!!!!) type generally fail miserably, firstly because the insulation is never great, secondly because they are VERY power inefficient and flatten 12v supply batteries in a few hours so can't run for long, and thirdly they only 'chill' (use that term loosely!) to around 18C below ambient, so not good for perishable foods!

One of the secrets of good (read that as also quite expensive! - Icytek, Igloo, Coleman top end! etc.) coolboxes, to get good life out of the cooling, is chill/freeze everything first, open as little as possible (many of the larger ones have a hatch to save opening the entire lid!) in use, and NEVER place anything not pre-chilled in it once in use! You really can get days of use out of them, IF you play by the rules! We've packed ours with frozen 2 litre ice cream tubs full of water to great effect, when they thaw, the tubs stack to minimise the space they take up. Always worth remembering, there always seems to be a layer of water at the bottom! - make sure nothing that is not in a TOTALLY waterproof container/wrapping loiters at the very bottom!

Always worth remembering too, most supermarkets and many off-licences sell bags of ice which can be a Godsend! Many camp sites also have a 'iceblock' freezing service!

Slight deviation from the concept of trying to keep fresh food fresh! Use tinned, packet and dried food! Even with a caravan and inbuilt fridge, I still take tinned/dried foods that don't require any special storage! It may require a bit of a rethink on everyday eating habits, but there is quite a lot of stuff that will keep you going for a few days without too much hardship, so not EVERYTHING has to be chilled! .... and plan your menu, so perishables get use within shelf life, and more durable items finish your stay!

Enjoy your trip, it's a great way of life once you've learnt a few tricks.

Since the coolbox question had been addressed, I shall echo Monty's advice about food that do not require refrigeration.

I carry a tin of Spam and a tin of concentrated creamy soup all the time.

The soup doubles up as a sauce, and Spam is great when sliced or chopped up then pan-fried until crispy, on their own or as an ingredient in all sorts of dishes including fried rice and pasta salad.

I have heard of good things about pouched curry by Kohinoor (available from Asda) and other brands, however, I have not tried them myself.

Tinned tuna is also very handy, as is tinned hotdog sausages.

Indeed not everything needs to be frozen or chilled.

Enjoy your trip!

Get a gas fridge. Shell Island is great until you need to do a big shop

Can't argue that gas fridges (3-way fridges) are great for off grid use, I've got one and it serves us well from time to time, and has done for decades, but not the solution in all cases!

It's a gas appliance with a naked flame - it CANNOT be used in a sealed tent space, you WILL poison yourself with deadly Carbon Monoxide fumes! It can't be left outside unsheltered either as not weatherproof and needs the flame sheltering from wind (risk of it blowing out, and no self re-ignition!), so needs to be in something like a well ventilated porch area (no SIG, or open sided etc.), but isolated from main tent space. You also need to keep it off the grass and away from tent walls because of the heat from the flame. You'd likely need something like a larger family tent for that layout/space.

They don't come cheap either! Around £250 upwards these days!

They are also quite large AND heavy (around 14Kg empty!), read big and unwieldy for some! - you will need to run it at home from the mains to get it to chill down properly first, it takes 8 hours or so, then pack it with pre-chilled/frozen food, which will bring it's weight up considerably, maybe 20Kg! And preferably run it on 12v in the car on journey to keep it chilled (you CAN'T run it on 12v from the car unless the engine is running, it would flatten the battery in a few hours, AND most modern cars turn off all electrics when the ignition turned off - so no power available!). You can't run it on gas in the car either! Apart from filling the car with toxic fumes, it'd probably use all the oxygen up and the flame would go out in such a tightly sealed space, AND the heat from the flame needs to escape somewhere.

I wouldn't be without my gas (3-way) fridge, but it does have it's limitations on use, and for OP's current needs, the quality coolbox would appear to be the most economic and versatile solution.

What I would add to the already excellent tips given, is that the bigger the "Ice Pack" the better.
I appreciate that a 1L bottle will take up more room than a 1" ice cube(!) but they really will stay frozen for much longer. You really can get that 5 days out of these better cool boxes.
And the beauty of a frozen bottle is that the contents eventually get used, as opposed to being poured down a drain. Be that water, barley water/squash. Even beer (Don't freeze them all... you'll need a couple to be thawed in time for the post-set up celebration!)
Just get that box proper cold before the final load up for departure.
Keep swapping frozen bottles at home, (re-freezing those that are thawing out) over two or three days and you'll eventually feel an icy blast when you open the lid!

Good luck.

Slightly off topic alert...

Saw Dometic CFXs on sale at the Karsten shop and I am glad I did not get one as I could barely carry the 14L one when empty let alone a bigger version!

I shall need to replace the cheapo 28L thermoelectric one from Lidl with another cheapy for keeping the drinks and salad stuff cool while I go camping in the van.

The fridge freezer is used to keep the perishables like meats and diary cold.

I have a Waeco CF25 that I got back in 2008 for £150 brand new, and it is still going strong, being a compressor fridge it can also be used as a deep freezer if required.

For of grid use I have a 50ah LiFePO4 battery pack, which I got for free (long story), that will keep the fridge running for at least 5 days.

I use a 20amp 14.60v LiFePO4 specific mains charger, which cost £30 and will charge the battery from zero to full in 150 minutes.

Ecoworthy offer a 50aH LiFePO4 battery for £140 only 6kg and very portable due to the small size.

You can get in car LiFePO4 chargers that plug in to the 12v cigarette socket, although 10 amp would probably be the max so not to blow the car's fuse, but would be ideal for keeping a LiFePO4 battery topped up whilst on the move.

Coleman Extreme, you cannot go wrong. I packed mine for a motorsport event on the Wednesday, and was still drinking very cold beer on Sunday evening, great bit of kit. 👍
