I have been looking around for a pan set for our next camping trip. I was just wondering if it is OK to use normal pan sets instead of those meant for camping? I have been tidying up the loft and found an old pan set and thought I could use that instead of buying some new ones.

Hi Wellybob
I would say go for the old pan set, if it were me thats what I would do...Then again I used to use mess tins to cook in so anything would better than them.......lol
Hope this helps

cooking pans are cooking pans, sauspans or what they are, if you have the room take them and cook what you like in them.

The only downside about using normal decent quality householdpans on a camping stove is that the heavy bases take a while to heat up. Camping pans have thinner bases...of course this also means you can burn the pan more easily!
But apart from that and the folding handles that some camping pan sets have, so they can nest, a pan's a pan, really. But I don't advise Le Creuset ones!

Hi,
We use normal pan sets, but be careful and dont do what we did. The pan handle was so much heavier than the pan part, and with our small cooker top it was too top heavy and fell off, burning the ground sheet. we brought another frying pan but made sure the pan handle was light weight

The thinner the base the easier food sticks, the thicker the base the heavier the pan.A good compromise is a cheap set of non stick pans.

Sue.
Or a horribly expensive set of lightweight(ish) but solid bottomed camping pans. Mine cost me £50 for a set of 3 + fryingpan + small kettle ten years ago, but have been worth every penny and still look as good as new.
If you do buy camping pans, look out for the size. The biggest one has to be able to take the largest amount of food you're going to cook....sounds obvious, but there are very few camping pans that can make pasta for a family of six. Also good lids cut down on cooking time and gas use.

We take a frying pan, a small saucepan, and most important of all our wok. The wok is great because you can cook anything in it from chips, boiled potatoes, pasta, stews, stirfry, curry, bolognese, chilli... etc, etc.We also take our George with us (we always have EHU) which is great for grilling rather than frying and then of course there's the BBQ, bargain at £15 from B & Q about 4 years ago and still going strong!

Silly thought just occured to me, but if your indoubt about your pan set, have you considered having a trial run cooking in your garden on your camping cooker with your pan set. Might start a whole new craze to rival garden BBQ, Garden camper cooking, done safely I should think If you have kids they would love the idea?
Better to findout in your garden what works and what does not, than miles from the shops or home.

I have just been down to Asda and whilst I was there I actually bought a 6 piece camping Cook set that has saucepans, frying pan and kettle. It was only £10.37 and is s a good size for us so problem solved. I must say I was actually quite impressed with the range of camping equipmnet they had.
