<DIV>It may be a luxury for some but for us it's pretty much essential. My OH and I are very into our photography but having (finally in my case) converted to digital we now need EHU as batteries just don't last 2 weeks and my memory card won't take anywhere near the 750 -1000 odd photos I take in a fortnight.   We don't use it for anything else so has nothing to do with being 'soft' or a 'luxury' (in most people's sense of the word)

My OH is a pro sports photographer - we use an invertor of the car to charge camera batteries and the laptop (he takes 800-100 shots a day!). It's worth looking at an invertor if you like the flexibility of non-EHU.

I tend to get the feeling that on many campsites there is a 'class system'. Tents get the field furthest away from the amenities whilst caravans with EHU get the pitches closest to the facilities.

If you think about that it's actually the wrong way round since it's usually tents that don't have their own facilities and ought to be closest. This just goes to show that caravanners who can afford the more expensive pitches also get to be closest to the amenities whether they need them or not...and it's the 'class' and not the logical requirement that does the talking.

Having said that, the site I was on this last weekend seemed to get it about right. It was a site on the River Thames and the fully serviced caravan pitches were closest to the river with the better views but furthest away from the facilities. The EHU pitches were behind them but on a raised level which also gave them a reasonable view of the river, be it over or between the caravans in front. The tents were furthest from the river with little view but closest to the facilities. I don't think they had EHU either.

I was initially booked in on the tent pitches because I said I didn't need EHU, but when I arrived and pointed out that I was in a caravan and not a tent they gave me an EHU pitch on the second row (like being at the theatre) but only charged me the non-EHU (tent) rate, which I thought was reasonable. I wondered if I had a tent and insisted on being in the front row even though I didn't want the fully serviced bit they would have given me a pitch there at the tent rate...possibly not.

I had always assumed that ehu pitches tend to be nearest the toilet block because thats the cheapest way of installing them ie grouping all the utilities (power, water etc) as close together as possible.

Anybody else either got any theories or know why this is? MT

i don't want ehu but i do want a nice view. I don't like the sound of looking at rows of caravans just so i can be near the loo blink smileys

hollands wood, new forest, seemed to have facilities (loo, showers, laundry etc) evenly distributed along the length of the site.  Caravans were mostly near the reception and i presume they had ehu but i don't know what provision was made for tents.

That has always been my assumption too - it is the cheapest way to lay out the amenities rather than having to build a bigger network across maybe several acres.
