Don't mind the odd bit of rain but we were away in the van last week and it rained almost non stop from Tuesday afternoon til Saturday morning and to be honest we'd had enough of it by then.  We did some indoorsy bits but we couldn't bbq which was our planned method of eating most nights so had to either go to pubs/takeaways or supermarkets for our meals and we didn't get to do the woodland walks we had planned.

I don't mind the rain either, sitting with a coffee ( glass of wine ) with door open and listening to the rain on tent is fantastic!! and I LOVE hearing the pitter patter at night!

Do agree that constant rain is a bit much, especially with children & dog!

I'll agree that hearing the "pitter patter at night" can give you a snug and comforting feeling,  unless you're in an Outwell Nebraska I suppose

just what i was thinking!

like most people i like sitting in a tent in the rain.. for a while.. if the sun is going to break through and then the light is lovely.

However a dark damp week in a wet field is my idea of misery.

We don't need to book holidays from work any more although i do have some childcare commitments. I am hoping when we get a bit more used to 'proper' camping (rather than throwing a pop up in the air for a festival ) we will take impromtu holidays when the weather is set fair cool smileys

i just need to get my 'stuff' organised unsure smileys

We cancelled our inaugral camping trip last September in the Lakes because of the rain - it just wouldn't have been a good start...

We braved it last weekend though, and managed to get the tent up in a break in the rain and down before it started again on the Sunday. Once we were battened down the hatches and had snugged up with the little heater on the rain didn't bother me. But I was trying to cook under the canopy and all this rain kept blowing in, that was fairly miserable.

My problem is I get bored very easily and like doing stuff - if I were in a hotel/cottage with none-stop rain it would be just as bad. At least camping you are forced out to go to the loo etc!

Light rain at night - perfect.

Rain on and off during the day - bearable.

Heavy rain from Friday night to Sunday afternoon - enough to stop a trip.

Then there's the sort of week-long rain we encountered in Normandy, where the main amusement was guessing how long it would take before the puddle in front of the tent would become higher than the groundesheet  .

Well I'm getting on a bit as well and I believe that after the first 5 mins there's nothing more pointless - If I'm going to sit inside and look out of the window I'd rather do it at home or from a good hotel room!!

My first post on here but felt entitled to say...

Best ever camping holiday as a child was Trenches Farm, not a clue where it was but one night there was an amazing thunder storm. I'm talking 30 years ago. We always went camping for our holidays and that is teh most memorable moment, next was nearly falling in a lake but, um, won't even go there!

Now, as an adult, I'm trying to encourage family camping as a holiday. Two years ago pitched a cheapy tent alongside my mums tent and just took my 2 kiddies. Last year, camped on a site very close to my mum's in Sussex and she guided me on how to put the frame tent together. It takes an age doesn't it? And taking it down seems to take even worse but at least we went as a family this time.

This year, we've just bought a easier (hopefully bcos that's what I told my other half!) to put up tunnel tent. Fingers crossed for 4 nights in the New Forest next month...
