Hello Naomi

We've got a completely loopy 3.5yr old german shepherd/collie cross ( and a 5 yr old daughter). We took up camping last year, taking the dog with us and she was a completely nightmare barking at people and try to jump up them for attention (even though she was tethered).

Since then we never took her again (and paid a fortune in kennel fees), until last weekend. We went camping with my husband's brother and sisters and their familes one of whom took their dog, so we thought we would try again.

We invested in a can of pet corrector which is just a can of air that you spray when the dog is doing something you don't want them to do i.e barking, jumping up, waitng for the postman etc......and it worked a treat. Yes she still barked once or twice but as soon as she saw you reach for the can she stopped and didn't try to jump up people. She was a million times better than before. We tried barking collars previous to that but they didn't work and didn't stop the jumping up.

We also use one of those corkscrew type things that go into the ground to attach her lead to and regarding tents we have a sig so she can't get out under the flysheet. Never leave them in a tent by themselves though.

Would definately suggest driving lessons !

What ever you decide, good luck and enjoy yourself.

I've camped on my own for years.  Never had a problem.  I'm not the most sociable person when I'm camping so tend to keep myself to myself.

Main advice I would give is look confident and know how to pitch your tent on your own!!

hello and welcome Naomi, i dont know too much about small tents, but the pop up tyes i have seen at various shops seem to be a bit on the bulky side when packed down - should be ok for a car but i wouldn't want to try to carry one on my back!

would be worth you looking at the pack size of amy tent you consider before you make your mind up, after all, you gotta carry it.

as others have said, try one of the meets from here, not too expensive, great company and a very good time.  plus there is always someone nearby willing to give a hand if its needed.

I'm sure you would be very safe camping on a nice family campsite and I'm sure that your faithful friend would look after you. Telling people he's a trained sausage muncher will be enough to deter most unwelcome advances!

I'm sure that most family campers would look out for you or lend a hand if you ran into any trouble.  I don't think we are alone in that if my OH wakes in the night due to a strange noise or barking dog he will get up and have a good look round.

You will probably find that once your friends hear about the interesting places and  fun adventures you've had camping they will want to try it too.

After all  I've heard that camping is the 'new sex' .....who wouldnt want to try it!!

Good Luck

Elle

will you be okay with a dog on public transport?

what do want to get out of camping? are you after a chill time, drinking round the campfire type affair? or an active sort(walking/drywalling etc..)?

I see a problem with the dog, not from a campsite view, from a how you gonna get their one..

best o luck..

hi Naomi

well I am single camper and have to say that the ukcs meets are great, you have company if you want it peace if you dont, done 5 so far including 2 as the host/organiser, best bet is to find one local to you and try it. Plus everyone looks out for each other

as for me I am looking to ditch the tent and get a caravan

Hi Naomi and welcome.

I was thinking that the Kyham biker might suit you. http://www.khyam.co.uk/product_tent.asp?category=Khyam%20QE&type=Backpacking/Cycling Have a look at the video on the link

It's light enough to do the hopping on a train thing, easy to put up and has a little porch area for cooking etc. Pack size 60x20cm and only 6kg

They are also very sturdy.

Have a good shop around for prices though.
