I will certainly look into that option. I always thought because of the temperature and pressure of injection moulding, the tool had to be toughened steel. A softer material might be OK for a smaller run but I will certainly ask the guy who made our tool and the moulder.
I will ask the dear wife to phone around colleges.

Delta Ground Anchors..the strongest, most secure tent pegs in the world! Nylon anchors twice as efficient as rock pegs in 'average' soil! Quality stainless pegs for tougher soil are available.
Hi Rob im adding my name to the list. After a wet weekend away the Deltas held strong. It very sandy soil on this site as well as Rex said about the top 4".Could have been a emergency put down if it wasnt for your anchors
Cheers Carole, keeping my fingers crossed for a good response. I reckon this could be a good product for beaches and soft soils.

Rob,
Our Mechanical engineer is on holiday at the moment, so I can't ask "he who knows".
But I think that I'm right in saying that's the difference between hard and soft tooling. Soft tooling as you say will be good for a limited production run, after which tolerances start to creep.
For something like a tent peg cover I'd be inclined to try to design in some allowance for the tolerance creep and squeeze a bit more life out of the soft tool.
Cheers, Mike, looking forward to any info you can offer.
I think that the only part of the mould that could cause a problem is the piece that would create the cavity for the peg to slip into. If this was machined absolutely square then even a slight rounding of the corners would not create a problem for a while. The actual flat surface of the insert would take a long time to wear away.
I like the sound of this.
