Might this be a good moment for anyone considering a new canvas tent purchase to look at the Dutch shops that are still selling quality cotton canvas tents?
I bought my ESVO 4 man on-line from the manufacturer and paid less than an equivalent Cabanon.
Also, I've just received my Hypercamp polycotton tarp, again bought on-line. The quality of workmanship and material is 1st class, even the bag for the poles is a quality item.
Perhaps it's time to look elsewhere if Cabanon are no longer offering the quality you want?
Hi Spudz
If I was a young camper in my fifties and wanted to buy a
Tent new. then it would be one of three, depending how much surplus money we had. If my budget was under £1000 I would not hesitate to buy the Biscay 370 cotton its only let down for me is not having the extended cooking facility that I would use in the cold months, If my old arthritic bones lock up much more we will have to find the money for a karston. But what I would really love is to be fit and erect one of DeWaards top of the range tents.
But for the present for me I am set up with my ten year old Champagne for short stays and small site camps and a choice of two Andorra's for long stays the new one for clean grass sites and the older one for long stays in woods etc.
But for the discerning camper at present there is again this year a good choice of second hand cotton tents for sale at very reasonable prices for the campers that know the benefits of a really good tent and are not following fashion.
These are my opinions but what others prefer to live in your chosen field is 100% you choice I hope you all buying tents read the reports over the last two years before you buy. Because after all, you don't get two much time of work for long stay holidays and when you go you need to keep your family safe, Dry, and last the length of the holiday you have looked forward to, and please believe me, There are a lot of tents out there not up to this. even for our summer weather. When the weather turns bad we read about it a few times every year.
All the best
Rex.
Regards
Rex

My experience of cotton frame tents has been more like 5 to 6 years and that's just 3 weeks a year. "This is provided the tent as not been left for long periods erected and open to attack by Ultra Violet Rays.
But erected for two weeks at a time say six times a year it will last for at least 20 years before a reproof is required." Crickey!! - you do a lot of camping. I wouldn't call six trips of two weeks each normal usage - that's nearly 3 months! I would expect to reproof every 2 -3 years at that rate. I have to confess that I have sold my sole to the devil and swapped my cotton frame for an Outwell PollyCotton. I have to say I can see very little difference between the two fabrics. The feel is the same and I have found no evidence that the Pollycotton doesn't 'breathe' as well. The only noticeable difference comes after prolonged rainfall when the cotton turns a darker colour as the water is absorbed. I know the cotton part of the pollycotton is supposed to do this - but I haven't noticed it. Maybe Cabanon have changed because they think POllyCotton is better (red rag to a bull?). Will PollyCotton last as long as 20 - 30 years? They haven't been around long enough to find out but mine is now just over a year old, been on 3 trips and looks as good as new. After 10 years I'll be ready for a change. No doubt the debate will go on for a while yet.

Hi brainhertz
May I suggest you research the expected life of cotton Duck, just one of the good cotton canvases. I only read the first few lines of your comment.
Regards
Rex.
Hi again brainhertz.
Yes my friend. Val and I try to get in 6 or seven camps of of 14 days or over in any twelve month period with a few shorter trips in between in our small tent. You see we have done our 50 years service to the workplace we are now OAP,s and try our best to enjoy what time we have left in our beautiful homeland living under canvas, as I have done for the last Sixty years that I can remember I was told I was still in nappies for my first camp, you know the ones you have to wash
All the best
Rex.
