I think Tencate is cotton canvas (actually a manufacturer.) It certainly is on our trailer tent. The dealer told us our canvas should last at least 25 years. You see plenty of old canvas tents and trailer tents on ebay.
But back to the topic ............ I would be amazed if Cabanon were to move totally away from canvas. It would be seen as a move down market and away from being a premium brand. I wonder if cotton is becoming so expensive to grow that it is pricing itself out of the market? I can't see the french wanting to play second fiddle to the dutch.

Might this be a good moment for anyone considering a new canvas tent purchase to look at the Dutch shops that are still selling quality cotton canvas tents?

I bought my ESVO 4 man on-line from the manufacturer and paid less than an equivalent Cabanon.
Also, I've just received my Hypercamp polycotton tarp, again bought on-line. The quality of workmanship and material is 1st class, even the bag for the poles is a quality item.

Perhaps it's time to look elsewhere if Cabanon are no longer offering the quality you want?
Hi Spudz
If I was a young camper in my fifties and wanted to buy a
Tent new. then it would be one of three, depending how much surplus money we had. If my budget was under £1000 I would not hesitate to buy the Biscay 370 cotton its only let down for me is not having the extended cooking facility that I would use in the cold months, If my old arthritic bones lock up much more we will have to find the money for a karston. But what I would really love is to be fit and erect one of DeWaards top of the range tents.
But for the present for me I am set up with my ten year old Champagne for short stays and small site camps and a choice of two Andorra's for long stays the new one for clean grass sites and the older one for long stays in woods etc.
But for the discerning camper at present there is again this year a good choice of second hand cotton tents for sale at very reasonable prices for the campers that know the benefits of a really good tent and are not following fashion.
These are my opinions but what others prefer to live in your chosen field is 100% you choice I hope you all buying tents read the reports over the last two years before you buy. Because after all, you don't get two much time of work for long stay holidays and when you go you need to keep your family safe, Dry, and last the length of the holiday you have looked forward to, and please believe me, There are a lot of tents out there not up to this. even for our summer weather. When the weather turns bad we read about it a few times every year.
All the best
Rex.
Regards
Rex

The new Satellite Cabanon is cotton, we nearly bought one from camping intenational recently. Went to the counter enquired about the sun canopy and there isn't one to go with the tent, we always buy the canopy, suppose I could try to make one (would need you here Rex) Fab tent though.

Helen

Hi johnwils
What I would do if I had the satellite I would buy 3 metal veranda poles and two adjustable upright poles One set of brass eyelet kit and a 4 X 3 meter Tatonka TC tarp made in Germany about £55 only comes with very long guys
You can then attach two of the veranda poles to the short poles that protrude out the front of the tent for the mini canopy then connect the two uprights to the poles with the other veranda pole across the front This makes a very strong frame. You can then put the tarp on, over overlap the tent roof and fit two Eyelets were the spikes come at the top of the pole and guy down this makes a very wind resistant sun a rain shade that is breathable so no drips in the morning. See my gallery I have the 4.5 X 4.5 Totenka TC tarp that is used on all my tents for many different set ups.
Hope that helps
Rex.
Hi again john
Just been thinking about the Satellite. you can buy pole connectors on the net and at some stores, by using two, two foot galvanized pipe flattened at one end and sawn to a point you could fit two strong Fiberglas poles into the pipes that are driven at least a foot into the ground connected to a three way 90 degrees connector with a veranda pole cut of on one end. You would have an arched sun awning to match the ten.
I have never tried this as all my tents have strait edges
but it is certainly a possibility.
Rex.

Some interesting statements there, Rex

"Cotton canvas looked after will last 25 to 30 years before it will need a reproof, and then go on for a few more years."

My experience of cotton frame tents has been more like 5 to 6 years and that's just 3 weeks a year.

"This is provided the tent as not been left for long periods erected and open to attack by Ultra Violet Rays.

But erected for two weeks at a time say six times a year it will last for at least 20 years before a reproof is required."

Crickey!! - you do a lot of camping. I wouldn't call six trips of two weeks each normal usage - that's nearly 3 months! I would expect to reproof every 2 -3 years at that rate.

I have to confess that I have sold my sole to the devil and swapped my cotton frame for an Outwell PollyCotton. I have to say I can see very little difference between the two fabrics. The feel is the same and I have found no evidence that the Pollycotton doesn't 'breathe' as well. The only noticeable difference comes after prolonged rainfall when the cotton turns a darker colour as the water is absorbed. I know the cotton part of the pollycotton is supposed to do this - but I haven't noticed it. Maybe Cabanon have changed because they think POllyCotton is better (red rag to a bull?).

Will PollyCotton last as long as 20 - 30 years? They haven't been around long enough to find out but mine is now just over a year old, been on 3 trips and looks as good as new.   After 10 years I'll be ready for a change.

No doubt the debate will go on for a while yet.

Hi brainhertz
May I suggest you research the expected life of cotton Duck, just one of the good cotton canvases. I only read the first few lines of your comment.
Regards
Rex.

Hi again brainhertz.
Yes my friend. Val and I try to get in 6 or seven camps of of 14 days or over in any twelve month period with a few shorter trips in between in our small tent. You see we have done our 50 years service to the workplace we are now OAP,s and try our best to enjoy what time we have left in our beautiful homeland living under canvas, as I have done for the last Sixty years that I can remember I was told I was still in nappies for my first camp, you know the ones you have to wash
All the best

Hi nora
Now that is what I call a link. If campers cannot find A tent with that selection then there is little hope for them. I wish it was just off J25 of the M5

Hi all
Last summer there was a trader selling tents on the grass in the centre of the Clark's Village shopping centre, Did any of our members see the condition of the Outwell bear lake, the whole canvas was badly faded and the weft and warp of the weave were showing in slightly different colours. how long this tent had been on display I do not know, but last year I believe was only the second year they were for sale.

Rex.

Rex,

My new ESVO is 100%, 320grm cotton canvas, pyramid design with steel poles. It looks like this.
ESVO have been making quality equipment since 1922, I think they've a proven track record.

Now all I need is for it to stop raining here, 16 days non-stop now, bloody awful weather.

I fear La Nina is affecting our weather in the negative, much to the dispare of eager campers.

I notice that 'De Wit' sell quite a few pyramids including a 'Guadeloupe' and a 'Barbados'! They look identical to the Cabanon versions with the same name! Does anyone know if they are manufactured by Cabanon and sold under the De Wit name?

Further evidence that this might be the case is the other pyramid models available including the 'Mont Blanc' and the 'Bretagne', which can be found at www.maktplaats.nl only branded as Cabanon!!!

Hi Spuds,
That looks good to me, I would feel safe and secure in that in any weather. but I think we are going to see an unsettled summer again this year. But I hope I am 100% wrong

Hi lentrott
The DeWit Barbados is a 4 berth and the Cabanon Barbados
is a sixth But that is the only real difference. I can not much difference in the picture. MT may be along soon and tell us the answer.
Regards
Rex.

Is the 2008 Cabernon Guadeloupe 4 still 100% cotton?

Because it's top of my tent wish list.
