Hi again Loby.
Two much wine dulls the brain. Nothing wrong wrong with my estimate if it was a tec cool-box, but what I forgot is a well insulated compressor fridge spends as much if not more time
not running, this would say explain why 4 to 5 days, is within its capability's. Wonderful bit of technology, but too much for a tent camper to set up.
I learn something new on this forum every day.
Thank you Loby
Rex.
Hi loby
you have me interested now, I checked a few of these fridges out the figure I came up with for a 50L fridge with an ambient temperature of 32deg C with the internal temp set at 5 deg C it will only be using 13watts an hour, Now that is good.

Hi all
For members who would like to try the 12 volt set up with solar power, but do not have the time to make up their own battery box Towsure now supply one Item No BB100 for £40 + PP. And you can buy a 13 watt briefcase solar panel on the Internet complete with converter charging unit and all the leads for £55, you would need to buy the 12volt extension leads with 2 or 3 cigar plug outlets so you could be a Greene for £100
Regards
Rex.
Sorry forgot the lesure battery £160

I've been reading this thread with interest. I saw the box you mentioned above and actually have found Towsure seem to to it cheaper than anywhere else I've found on the net (by as much as £30 in some cases).
The problem I have is that the water pump I have has a three pin 12V plug (rounded pins) and I haven't managed to find an adapter that would allow me to plug that in. I've found them going the other way but nothing going 3 pin socket to cigar plug. Have you seen any or is it easy to change the unit from a three pin to a cigar plug style?

Hi Terry
The cheaper low amperage cigar plugs will require you to soldier the wires onto the terminals the expensive heavy duty one I used for the split relay uses screws. The live on the Cigar plug is the centre that pushes in and the earth are the ones around the outside usually two springy ones. If you have the gear to soldier it really is easy to change over or try to find a cigar plug with screws.
Sorry I cannot be more help sat here terry.

Thanks Rex, I didn't think it was going to be easy but hoped to be proved wrong. I'll leave it for now and manage without the pump. Can manage everything else with the hook up. I do like the look of that Accubox though, so might save for it as I'll need the leisure battery as well.
the three pin plugs you speak of used to be the norm for standard lamps etc here and are 5 amp rated rather than 13 as in the ones we generally use ,no doupt some are still available out there but check first though they are the same.
in reality you could use a standard 13 amp socket and a 13 amp plug and wire it to the 12v wires ,so long as the lives are where they should be it will work.
i personally dont like cigarette type sockets ,they are not very robust and the plug soon becomes loose burning the positive connection on the plug (they get pretty hot) and kiddies like poking things in them.
no harm will come to anything running on mains if they are plugged into the now 12v supply but ofcourse its different the other way round.
to put in a socket into the thin "wood" they call fittings now just put the socket on the outside and its box on the inside ,a carefully cut hole for the back of the socket so it all goes through bar the flat parts around the edge, two holes for the screws bobs your relation ,screw through the socket into the boxes screw holes inside, this ensures the wires dont get snapped of in lockers or cupboards etc.
There were small (about 1.5" dia) 3 pin plugs and sockets around at one time and I have seen them in an older caravan. I take it that these were 12v.
In my old Abbey Oxford there was a socket and 2 spair plugs of a variety that I have never seen before. They were like the cigar plug/socket arrangement but stubbier and quite robust looking.
In my trailer tent days I fitted the 2 pin (pins angled) 12v plugs and sockets but the plugs are pretty flimsey and do not last more than a couple of seasons.
Personally I find the Marine type (screw connections) cigar lighter plugs and sockets to be the best. They are more expensive but they are also more robust.
If I can change the 12V plug on the pump to a cigar type one I can then use it on mains via the 240V/12V adapter I have already for the coolbox. Or, eventually, if I don't have 240V I'll be able to use a leisure battery set up like the Accubox.
Hi Terry
Yes all caravan water pumps to my knowledge run off 12 volt DC. All you will require to run your pump is to change the plug to a basic cigar plug as the water pumps don't draw much power, and connect it to a 12volt leisure battery with clips or through the cigar plug and the battery box we discussed.

Rex.
