We've been using our old pan set that were consigned to the loft because a) they won't go in the dishwasher b) they're a bit small for a family of 4.  They work fine for camping (but they are on the small side for a regular set of pans).  Have to say tho' the cheap camping set at Asda sounds tempting.  We also did the garden camp cooking thing before we first went last year (we actually do full scale garden camping quite often, just for a larf!  The dog thinks we're nuts sleeping in a tent when there's a perfectly nice house 5m away)

Just got rid of my camping set in favour of a cheapish set of non stick pans.

I just hate those clip on handles!

Would have thought Le Creuset pots would be excellent over a wood fire and with a high feel good factor.

Myself, I just take the stainless steel copper bottomed pans from home for big camps and they are fine; they are great over the fire because the food has less of a tendency to burn compared with thin camping pots.  If you have the pans where you can put a steamer on top, so much the better as the assembly saves space.  I have a special copper kettle I keep just for camping trips but it doesn't go over the fire in case it melts! 

I have just bought a set of stainless steel pots and a lightweight camping stove made by Mountain Safety Research (actually the same outfit who make Thermorests) for back packing.

The stove is tiny and would therefore be great for picnics or the beach.  I tried the stove and one of the pots in the back yard yesterday and cooked my porridge in under two minutes but I had to keep stiring or the porridge would have burned because although top quality, the pot is made of thin material.  I'll report in a couple of weeks time regarding how good the kit is up mountains in the wind and rain!

I was making the assumption that the OP, like most folk, would be cooking on some sort of camp cooker.

As to cooking on an open fire, Le Creuset pots are a bit expensive for that sort of thing. I've got two big cast iron pots that I used to use for campfire cooking and while the thick bases coped very well, my abiding memory of them is having to scrub the greasy soot of them before packing up. Even with the old washing up liquid trick it was hard going, and I wouldn't want to put a £50 Le Creuset pot through that, tbh.

Used to do big big youth group camps (with any luck I'll be doing some more in the future!) and I know what you mean about scrubbing the pots after the've been over the fire for three days! 

We used to put them in bin liners and clean them up after we got home: lots of wire wool, vim and elbow grease!  I'd hesitate to attack Le Creuset pots in such a way tho'!

Not sure the cost is an issue mind: cheap stuff will do at home but only the best is good enough for camping!
