I would not put up with this situation - you should have a new replacement or your money back, including any transit costs. Mention the Sale of Goods Act - the tent was clearly not fit for the purpose for which it was sold - and don't be fobbed off. The responsibility lies with the retailer NOT the manufacturer.
We had a pole break on our Gelert Vario 5 about 6 months after we had bought it, and Gelert were kind enough to send us an entire set of new poles for the tent by next day courier. now that is customer service ;)
