"as he scratched his head i wandered over and asked if i could give him a lift "do i look stupid?" he said, well, discretion being the better part of valour i couldn't be honest so i just said "not yet" "

A tent is like a newborn born baby..... to some they all look the same..... but if its yours it's beautiful.

When we arrived in the Dordogne last year hot and tired after a long drive, the man next to us came and helped to put the tent up and his wife brought us cold drinks - bliss!

3 days later they were gone and the new couple (fellow UKCS members but not sure of their username) arrived quite late and with a huge tent that they had only had a trial run with. Hubby offered to help put it up and I got the soft drinks.   Passing the Karma on.

We left the Dordogne (our neighbours helped us pack the car, and fed our kids while we did it) and when we arrived at Biscarosse in a storm most people sat and laughed at us battling with the tent - but the very kind people in the caravan behind us came out in swimsuits and cagoules - announced that they hadn't a clue about tents, but said they couldn't sit and watch us struggle and that if we needed some extra hands just 'tell use where you want us'.   In the wind and rain it was MUCH easier with 4 people I can tell you.

However, in the UK we once saw a group of 'young' people struggling with a broken pole - my friend went to offer them some help (gaffa tape) and was basically told where to go - so like others here, we sat back to watch the 'entertainment'.

I think the moral is that unless you are very confident you should accept any help offered, and if you can help you should offer it - worse case is that you will be turned down.

However, I would put a proviso that if hubby and wife are clearly arguing its probably best to stay well clear - or just offer a drink rather than help. I think arguing couples would prefer to think they are invisible.

We are new to camping and i would be greatful of any help when we are putting up our tent.

Had a trial run at weekend which took us 2 hours to get it up properly and its only 3 man dome tent with porch. OH found it very amusing as i ended up inside it and he let it go and left me there.
So anyone around Staffordshire or Richmond in Sept and see's a girl covered with canvas HELPPPPPP please.

i have to be honest, i am reluctant to accept help if i`m struggling. because if it is me and the wife, i feel that i can relax and tell her how stupid she is and to "stop holding that bit like that and hold it like this" and also "don`t put it there you idiot put it here". however i don`t think a nice person offering help would appreciate me talking to them like this.

fresh air, lager and no work. who could want more?

the first time went ventured out camping, we thought we would stay local to home, in case things went badly wrong and we could return home, we were so confident that we had read the instructions of our new tent so many times, we lefted the instructions at home, we arrived at campsite with a strong wind blowing, and just could not figure out how the tent should be erected correctly, after half hour a neighbour came over and offered help which was gladly accepted and possibly saved a marriage lol

Yes please, all help greatfully accepted.

I would never refuse a genuine offer of help and would be more than willing to help others even if it's just putting the kettle on, keeping children amused ( if that's PC - I am CRB checked though) or opening a bottle! As we are new to tents it would probably only be the last 3 for a while yet

my dh is always helping other campers with things but once we were battling to erect our tent in a gale lol and pouring rain and not one bugger offered us any help,we had 2 children marooned in the car crying and our stress levels were rising,i got peed off when i saw the people in the caravan next to us sitting watching us out their window and had the cheek to raise there glasses to us lol.
thankfully 2 kind blokes finally appeared and helped us lash the tent down and we brought them some beer as a thank you.
as for the people in the next pitch we tried to ignore them as much as possible even though they tried to get their kids to play with ours in our tent!!!,even heard the mother say "why dont you play in there with their kids and give me some peace"!! bloody cheek.

My problem is ..when we are on a UKCS meet...we cannot offer to help our fellow member out...as we are always the last to get there...lol...when we arrive everyone is usually 'merry' with the drink...

Well I'm shocked at some of the younger people's attitude [Ok, maybe not *that* shocked]

If you see a big ugly bloke with a beard struggling... lend a brother a hand I certainly won't bite your hand off!

Johnny - Sure to be struggling soon!
