Gah right ...

On Calor ,we get a 4.5 kg refill for  about a tenner and if we take the fridge only on one long break of 2 weeks and a couple of long weekends ,it lasts the season and then slightly int othe next ,we usually have to refil at the start of the next season ,does that help atall?

where is it you get gas for this price?? i paid about £15 only the other week

i have always worked in the building trade, i have collected offcuts of kingspan insulation (usually used on loft conversions).

the first time we used it i made a box about 2' cube taped together with a loose lid.

we put a couple of cases of beer in the fridge, froze almost all our food and bought several 2 litre bottles of water.

we loaded it just before we set off and it was a massive success with the exception that wereever there is a cut edge it releases a type of dust, so upon our return i made a plywood box and lined the inside of it with the kingspan, taped all the edges and lined it with a wheelie bin liner.

we have just come back from a 3 night stay, and upon arriving home late we left it in the van containing just some surplus wine/beer etc. the next morning (day 5) the wine was still cool. an absolute must for us as we never use ehu, prefering a farmers field to stay we do forfeit these luxuries.

Just to point out, a lot of camp sites do cool pack freezing.  Hand them in the night before and get the frozen ones back the next day

We never have EHU and have always been fine. We always take loads of ice packs, double what you require as then you can have half in your box and half in the site freezer (providing they have one!).

I also freeze cartons of juice as they make a refreshing drink once cool and freeze a bottle of milk to take too.

We managed for a week on our last camping trip without any problems

We do the same. We also wrap the milk and butter in wet tea towels and put them in a carrier bag if it's very hot, they stay cooler then. In hot weather, we resign ourselves to buying a fresh pint of milk each day and get it in the late afternoon/evening, so it's nice and fresh for breakfast.

Mind you, we only cook breakfast, and eat out the rest of the time, so it's not like we have to keep meat fresh or anything.

Very helpful Skatty - probably cheaper than having the ice packs re-freezed on site and certainly more convenient.

Many thanks

It wouldn't be more convenient for us. We'd have to buy a trailer to put it in! We only take one small coolbag.

I add bags of ice from the supermarket to my coolbag.

It will melt, so i keep anything that might go soggy wrapped in polythene and pack it where it won't harm anything if it leaks on the journey.

Even a bag of ice a day isn't a huge expenditure and at the end of the holiday there is nothing to pack away :)

Cheap and cheerful

for weekends

Coolbox +  1    four litre milk bottle  3/4 filled with water   pre- frozen

week

coolbox + 2   four litre milk bottles pre frozen

2 weeks and over

coolbox + 2 four litre milk bottles pre frozen and when they defrost  buy a bag of ice from local supermarket and put in to milk bottles ( this stops your food floating when the bag of ice melts. )

If your going abroad buy a 3 way fridge
