We always travel to the IOW from Lymington to Yarmouth and never had any problems.

Lyminton is quite a small port so no fear of large queues either and very easy to get on and off the ferry.  In fact we've always managed to get on an earlier ferry if we've arrived early.  Approx 35 mins across the water so fine for us.  Wightlink are replacing their ferries for brand spanking new ones, Cenred, Cenwulf and Caedmon will be no more!

Wight Sun, Wight Sky and Wight Light are the new ones, see below:

Don't know the answer to the question you asked - but I was on the phone to my friend on the IOW last week and she pointed out to me, next time I go over remember to book using Tesco vouchers. It takes the pinch out of the price.

Apparently lots of the islanders use Tescos for this very reason - when they want the car over to the mainland they use their stock.

Dozy.

As an islander i would agree, tescos clubcard vouchers £40 of travel cost for £10 or clubcard points. As for the ferry if you havent booked or indeed got here, the only difference really is the travel times (redfunnel southampton is an hour crossing, Whightlink portsmouth and lymington are approx 40 mins) and reading one of your posts earlier, there is no need to use the cahin ferry, follow the main road up and head towards newport then go from there. If you use the chain ferry you will end up in cowes and have to go down to newport anyway and ofcourse have a fare to pay.

And yes the ferry cost are a nightmare but we are trying to fight them down

I go to the IoW often because my sister in law and her husband live in Ventnor.

I live in London and use the Southampton to Cowes ferry because getting out of Portsmouth on a Saturday afternoon is a complete bugger whereas getting out of Southampton onto the M27 is easyish and makes up for the slightly longer drive.

The A31 from Winchester to Guildford is virtually empty as far as Farnham and is a nicer drive than the A3 or the M3.

Take care
