A metal box is the safest place to be if lightning strikes. The current runs round the outer skin and can't get in. Same with a car...the lightning runs round the outside framework. It's called a Faraday Cage.

Sorry bit off topic ..but........wouldnt you be just as safe in a tent???. It's fabric or synthetic material and wouldn't conduct electricity..

You may have metal poles, but they run into the ground!! ,(Unless you're daft enough to hold onto them in a thunderstorm!!)

Just wondered..

Sunlight in the morning was is the world's way of saying "It's a gorgeous day. Come out and enjoy me". 

I'm with the get up early and enjoy it brigade.  Nothing nicer than staying on a site with a gorgeous view and enjoying it with a nice cup of tea and just the birds for company.  Besides getting up early and going to bed earlier means you make the most of the daylight.  Useful for camping.

We camped near Ben Nevis a few years back and had some monsterous thunderstorms (I think it's an alpine thing).  We were woken in the middle of the night by a huge clap and I insisted we sit in the car.  Needless to say the storm was accompanied by the usual heavy rain and the area between us and the car had become an impromtu pond.  I was not popular that night.
