I am really lucky in that there is a corner of my kitchen/diner where a dog crate can sit and not be in the way. My dog is curled up asleep in his right now, from choice as the door is as usual open. Its his bed, its where his food gets put down, and he loves it. He's nearly eleven now and he's been using a crate like this since we got him when he was two. As a result, he travels happily and safely in one in the car and the same on camp sites. I am a huge fan of dog crates, when properly used..

But I agree with Lidds that crates can be abused as cages or places or restraint and that is just plain wrong.

I also agree with Lidds and Merry, dog crates should be used by the dog by choice and not to calm, quieten or chastise him/her.  We have a dog crate for our Bulldog Busta, it's his space, his haven - no humans allowed.  It's in the hall so he can see the lounge, kitchen and conservatory.  He goes in there and cuddles down on his cushion/blanket for a chill when the kids are too much or just because he wants to.  He's usually got a bone or his treat ball with him.  There's always a bowl of water in there for him. He loves it!

we usually give him a long lead to have a roam, but this then causes him to get tangled around table legs/guy ropes etc.

have you tried him on a "running lead" they're quite easy to set up, you need ,either 2 of the corkscrew things ,or one and somethind solid  to tie to.

place the corkscrews  about 4 or 5 metres apart, along the side of your pitch, then tie a rope between them, and pass this through the handle of a short lead.

the dog can then roam up and down without getting tangled up.

if you place a mat and the dogs bowls at one end , it wont knock them over.

We too used a crate to train our most recent dog and I think it is a really good idea and extremely useful particularly for puppies at night for training and safety.  As the others have said it is in no way to be used as 'a cage' only as a pleasant retreat.

Hi all

As the camping season gets a little nearer (yippee!!) I was wondering if anybody with dogs has the problem of their pet crying when it is tied up.

We have a 2 year old Staffie who is a very good boy, he loves camping (always jumps in my car boot as soon as he sees me getting camping bits ready!),  and especially loves sitting by the campfire at night - (usually when he's nicked my chair and i have to sit on the floor on blanket! )sorry, going off subject there - obviously we keep him tied up when we are sitting around during the day but he really likes to be right in the middle of everybody, but this is not always possible.

we usually give him a long lead to have a roam, but this then causes him to get tangled around table legs/guy ropes etc.  We take treats/chews for him but he's a funny thing, he doesn't eat them at camping - strange!!!

Just wondering what you all do with your dogs, especially the stronger type dogs - he's quite a lump and sitting on our lap all night isn't possible!!!

Do you think he would be happier if we took his crate, although maybe a little on the small side but would be ok just for lying down in maybe better knowing he has his own little space!

our little staffi is just same but we have a little bed all so she has a chair which she will sleep on less tha a tenner its just like bein at home

We find our dog is alot better if we have her on a retractable walking lead, she doesnt get tied up as much and seems to be more comfortable. We also get her bed out so she knows where to go. But it doesnt matter how much you try, they will always get tied up with tables, guy lines etc... its all part of the pleasure!
