I have camped with my brats for many years and even taken their friends along as well, and kids will make friends with kids who will make friends with other kids and so on.....Please remember they are not like us grown-ups, they don`t have any hang-ups, embarassment isn`t even in their vocabulary. Turn `em loose and have fun !!

Hi

All I can say is go for it and have fun, it's a good experience for any child.

I am taking 28 kids on cub camp in a few weeks (not on my own, am not completely potty) which is always hectic.

Family camping is me on my lonesome (the OH only gets outdoorsy when there is a fishing rod and a plane ticket to South Africa dangling in front of him) with my 3 kids and my niece.  They range in age from 3 to 12 and I have one with autism spectrum.  They all absolutely love it.  Like one of the other posts, at the start of the season I stock up on colouring stuff and we have what we call the gadget box which has small board games and little toys.  Uno is a great one and bingo believe it or not, no matter what the age!!.  I also make sure I have one of those cheap outdoor games kits with the balls, badminton rackets etc.

They all love having a job, the little one's follow me round with tent pegs while the big ones start unloading and they all love putting their stuff in their rooms.  Even things like topping up the water etc.

The past couple of years I have gone for the cheap and chearful sites, but to be honest, last year especially with the bad weather we had was a bit of a slog keeping them all amused.  This year we are going to Hendra in Newquay as a bit of a treat to make up for the disaster last year.  It is an all singing all dancing site so we are going to give it a try.  The rest of the time we slum it on scout camps so they need to have a treat once in a while.

Make sure you read the site reviews before you book anything is my advice and if poss see if you can find someone who has been there.  We were told last year that the site was virtually flat!!!! When infact we were in the slope of a valley, they don't enjoy it if they are falling all over the place all the time.

But most of all, just have fun

I love all these posts about jobs, rules and routines and especially the scrapbook idea.

Pity more parents don't follow these simple ideas, it would make camping more enjoyable for all...especially those of us who don't have kids and get annoyed by screaming bunches of unsupervised semi-feral children.
