We intend to take our puppy for the sirst time at the end of May, He will sleep in the camper with us probably on the beds, as he does at home. We have the corkscrew so that he can sit ouside with us. Just got to sort a car harness out as with two kids still on child seats, and a small car, a crate is out of the question.
We take our lab/collie cross and he stays with us at night. He has a crate for the car, but only because he'll only get in the car with it lol. He feels safer in his crate while in the car. We're very lucky, he doesn't bark at all anyway, so we don't have a problem lol. I'd just see how it goes in the tent first, then if it doesn't work out, then try the car
We have always taken our dogs camping and one of them in particular (mini schanuzer) does bark at everyone who walks past our tent, but only if she sees them which is odd!
I do feel a touch embarassed by this but then I think that on the whole my dogs probably make less noise than a campsite full of kids and I'm just being paranoid!
Our dogs always sleep in our bedroom with us, and in fact I did wake up last year to find Gizmo had somehow managed to worm his way down into my sleeping bag with me!
Hi, our young dog barks at the slightest noise and we were very worried when taking her camping, she was far better in the tent because if she barked then I was there to 'shush' her. I couldn't bear the idea of leaving her in the car, she would be far too cold and miserable and more likely to bark anyway.
The next door neighbour to us on the last campsite we were at left their dog in the car and in the morning i could cheerfully have strung them up. Her dog barked incessently because it was left in the car, it didn't disturb her though!
I take two bouivers and as I camp on my own, they sleep with me in the bedroom pod (security and extra warmth!). They will occasionally bark if someone walks past too close but a quick shush and all is quiet again. I personally wouldn't feel happy about leaving them in the car as I have brought them along to be with me and it is their holiday too.
When around the tent during the day they are tied to one of those corkscrew stakes, and they are happy.
I had the same worries when we went on our first camping trip last year but our dog was fine. She slept in the bedroom pod with us and only very occasionally did a low growl if someone walked by. She was fine in the day tho. I took a bone from the butchers with us to keep her busy but she hardly bothered with it there was so much going on.
My dog, bless her is a houdini so has to be attached to something - she worked out how to undo the zips on the bed pod, So I now always make sure the zip is at the top. She will go in her crate in the tent but I prefer her loose, as people say better radiator that way. Never makes any noise at night but during the day when she is on her spike is fine unless she spies another dog and then barks, so have to try to screen her a bit with wind breaks.
The first time we went camping we took our 2 pooches - a Bichon and Lhasa. Our friends also have a small pooch - lot older mind - anyway first night - grand - they had their own bone beds ( raised off the floor ) but crept onto ours in the middle of the night, the second evening we decided to take them on a long walk to tire them out and then put them in one of the bedroom pods to settle them down. Closed the mesh door and we went for a drink in our friends tent 10 yards away. No problem - they were fast asleep when we got back in. So the 3rd night - did the same routine again but this time decided to go to the pub on the camp site about 3 mins away. Well imagine how we felt when a neighbouring camper came to look for us ? ' have you got 2 small white dogs ?" " yes, why ? " she said " well 1 of them is in our tent and I dont know where the other 1 is " ! I was gutted - we looked all over the campsite for the Bichon - I was dying inside - my husband found him in our friends galley in their tent.He had crawled under the door and stayed in there. The both had been disturbed by kids running round the tent and they ripped their way out of the inner tent - crawled under the door and off they went. . So as to what we do now - well - they have never been crated but as we want to take them camping and I want to feel safe that they wont try that again, I have now bought a 42" crate, practised at home with the door off - and they are so use to it now - they jump in there no problem. The idea now is to put the crate in 1 of the spare bedrooms with the door open and then should we pop over to another tent or to the onsite pub at least I know they will be there when we get back. fingers crossed. Will have to have a little practice before hand though, perhaps leave them for 20 mins while we take a walk round the area, just so we can keep an eye on how they react.
were up to 12 in a tent with us this year when we get away. yes i know were mad. As we go away with whippet racers alot and most have at least 5 dogs you would think all you would here all night is dogs barking et we never hear any. It does depend on your dog. we never leave them in our van as its an mpv with windows. our frends have proper vans with cages bulit in and there dogs stay in there overnight but with vents and aircon as dogs can get very hot overnight. allos if the suns warm and up early a car with windows can get leathaly hot in a very short time so you will have to be happy to leav windows and open all night if dogs are in there.
we choces cages for most of ours and have found a cottone cover over in the summer or jammys on the dog in the winter keeps them happy we only ever hear them if they get cold so jammys are allways with us. my old guys sleep in the bedroom aria with us as thats what they do at home and as there going a bit blind they like to here us there.
with 11 last year we have never had a problem dogs are dogs and if there cosy warm there fine and you fined all the exerces they get camping they sleep realy realy well. i have a bedtime routine of walk and bickys at home i carry on when were away so they know to do there last tolet before bed and we dont here anything for 8 hours.
you will love camping with your dog its the best

It's nice to be important but its more important to be nice
Thinking about special dog beds, I saw a lovely pic on here somewhere of a big dog curled up on a regular folding camp chair, can't seem to find it now - it was so cute!
We take our greyhound with us - and she's a big boney girl- not a cuddly fluffy thing. We've had a variety of tents - when we were short on space, she had a crate covered with blankets to keep out the draught...it just made it safer and more practical with gas lamps and hot drinks etc during the evenings or on wet days. She did moan a bit in the mornings if you were tardy getting up to let her stretch her legs though.
Now we have a bigger tent and SIG, we just take her bed and blankets to go on top of her or where ever she chooses to fling them in the night and she sleeps in the main bit of the tent, no problems and no moaning.
We have the corkscrew thingy for the day time - but she is only ever on that if we are all outside too, and we'd never leave her in the tent on her own - or in the car unless for a minutes if for some reason we all need the facilities at the same time.
Our biggest worry is her security - she is beautiful and all the time we get people just making offers for her - some are quite peristent - and we'd be devastated if she got doggy napped.
On behalf of non dog owners, can I please ask that you keep your dog under control (i.e. tied somehow) when on the campsite as I've lost count of the number of times I've had to extract a dog from inside our tent.
And yes, before you all shout, I know everyone on here are wonderful and careful owners and no-one would ever dream of letting their dog off loose on a campsite. Just making the point that not everyone thinks as highly of your dog as you do, and not everyone wants to meet it.
