Thanks very much everyone.  It's so sad reading that so many of us are in similar circumstances, but I don't feel quite so alone now.

It's great to feel the support on here whatever the problem there's always someone that is willing to share their experience or lend a shoulder. The cheap sites is good there are some other threads about them too, but no harm in having some more!!

HI Tracey and the other folk. My OH was officially made redundant at the end of April , and I've just had to reapply and interview for essentially my own job (fortunately I still have it). We've both now been made redundant twice - yes, going back to a 'job for life' stability would be wonderful as this climate is so unsettling. You're most definitely not alone. We are still planning on going away as fortunately I'd booked and set aside some funds at the end of 08 (premonition?). I think it would bereally good for morale if you could have at least one trip away from home, even if not far. After all, you eat at home and consume power etc so there wouldn't be much of a difference perhaps? How about Little Switzerland in Folkestone - fairly basic facilities but less than £10 a night I think at last mention, and in a lovely setting under the cliffs with views out to sea (but trees for shelter too). Let's hope for a long hot summer as we all deserve one

With my "at work" head on I recommend all of you in trouble out there to visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau. They should be able to help you check that your'e getting all the benfits that your entitled to, help sort out the people that you may no longer be able to afford to pay and if necessary calculate redundancy payments. Good luck to all.

Hi, normally we sort of wing it with holidays, deciding near the time where to go etc etc.  Last year I started saving euros on a pre-payment card (I know some folk prefer other debit cards etc) as I liked the idea of buying my euros when they were at a favourable rate and also the knowledge that I knew how many euros I actually had saved.  At the same time I discovered (through this site) Camping Cheques and also bought a load of them when I could afford it.  I think I must have been psychic because OH self employed business has been DIRE this year and without our (unintentional) forward planning this year we wouldn't be going on any holiday.  I think I will continue with loading on pre-loaded card and will buy in more camping cheques for next year as it has been great for us with the credit crunch and means we can still go away.  We probably won't trip the light fantastic as normal but with a bit of compromise we will still have a good holiday!

Hiya Tracey, sorry to hear about your hubby's redundancy. We can't afford to go away for a week in the summer due to the prices and we both work! We'll be going close to home for Sat nights to a site that won't cost us the earth and also hoping to find a cheap site near Carmarthen so we can visit family on the odd weekend too. Some of the prices at the moment are extortionate and with fuel on top it's worse!

Hope something comes up for you.

Andi

PS: Forgot to say I was made redundant last August, it took me 2 months to get another permanent job (for less money) but I got one! Stay positive.

Hi folks.

Some good news for me and my family at least, got the phone call yesterday, telling me that I was no longer under threat of redundancy, although on the downside two of my work collegues have been binned, taking our national field based team down from 13 to 11 persons, we did once use to be 16 persons, the 11 of us remaining are to still cover the whole of the uk, so that will mean a few extra overnites from home, and more work to do, just glad the process has ended, waiting to find out is the worst part, just hoping the economy improves before I have to go through it all again maybe soon, maybe later, who knows?.

i wouldn't bother...

when i was made redundant in december they were absolutely hopeless due to the quantities of people

they opened at 10:00am took tickets for everyone that was there at that time, then closed the doors and refused anyway after that as they couldn't cope with the volume

they left a note up saying to visit 'The Law Centre' for advice, and they were even worse.  2 weeks for an appointment and that was dependent on what advice you wanted

i found the whole thing really depressing, including a 2 hour wait at the job centre to initially sign on for any benefit (which were absolutely hopeless anyway, being a home owner you get nothing)

found work 4 weeks later, but even with the new job they are announcing redundancies.  never know such a depressing volatile economy and future

there are other places to help.  www.supportwm.co.uk has loads of advice and help for people struggling during the recession.  Might not cover all your needs, but should cover most.

On a personal level I was unemployed for 4 months and before i managed to get my current role I applied for around 250 jobs (all relevant, just as a contractor not too fussed about working away from home).  I think the jobs are there, but just lots of competition at the minute.  Keep applying and keep your head up.

I'm sorry to hear that Val. My Bureau sees 25 - 30 clients per day, relying on mostly volunteers to run the service. The door is open 9 - 4 and everyone who comes in is at least seen to check for emergencies. Don't let one bad experience put you off using the service again.

I've not worked for nearly 2 years now, due to my own ill health and also my wife's MS relapses leaving her a lot less capable on her own. My employer laid me off on medical grounds, but advised me that the door was open for me to go back anytime. I just found out recently that the door is firmly shut because they have made most of my colleagues redundant as we were an outsourcing company, so if the contracts dry up, we dont have any work. So far 2 major contracts moved to another provider in India, with another 3 or 4 talking about moving all support work and outsourcing contracts to India too. These are bleak times.

Thanks Martin! Will keep that in mind for Caernarfon as it sounds great! But I need Carmarthen in South Wales if you have anymore of those up your sleeve

Pitches when "Wild camping" are absolutely free and in beautiful places.

Problem is you need the skills which take a long time to aquire, the kit, which costs a fortune and to enjoy hill walking because low land wild camping is "out!"

Like everyone my job is less secure than it was and I'll be retiring in six years if I keep my job anyway so I'm getting the kit together while I've got a reasonable amount of money.

If I were to lose my job I suppose the (newly aquired) 4x4 would have to go and I wouldn't be able to afford to hire a car so coach and carry my kit would be the only option.

My favourite "official" campsite is Acton Field in Purbeck. It's pretty primitive with no EHU etc but last year pitching the Aruba was £10.00 / night and £5.00 / night for each of the small tents, is freindly and has a wonderful view. I'll be there first weekend in August with the Aruba and an orange Force Ten at the top of the field.

Take care

R

Isn't it time more sites did off-peak offers for people on benefit, you know mid-week half-price on production of valid ID?
