Our dog loves coming camping with us, he is crated in the car, and we make sure we have plenty of wee stops along the way.

Don't forget dog poop bags, and a big bottle (we use clean 4 pint milk cartons) of fresh water, and  we have recently bought a fantastic folding water bowl from Pets At Home, it is made out of water proof fabric, and just folds up really small, so it is so easy if on a long journey, I can just open the boot, open his crate, and give him a drink, or a little snack out of it. ( can also be used for dog food).

Agree with the other comments about the corkscrew, and if your dog is a chewer, buy a length of chain from B&Q, they will cut it from a reel to the length you want, as when our dog gets a bit fed up, and wants to explore, he will bite through his lead, and be off like grease lightening, and the chain has now solved the problem. Obviouslly get the chain to the size of the dog, otherwise if it is too big, it will weigh him down!! Lol.

Another thing I can really recommend is the dog wipes from Pets At Home. The come in a pack, (like wet wipes), and are brilliant at giving them a scrub up, and a freshen without getting them soaking wet, a friend told me about them, and I was skeptical, but they really do work, try them.

One more thing we find invaluable is a super absorbent dog towel, he loves to go swimming, and this is brilliant for drying him off before we go into the tent, It is from the same shop, and isn't very big, but really does work, and dries out incredibly quickly, it is so much fun taking a dog camping, but I do wish sometimes that there were more kennels around that would do day kennels, as so many attractions won't let dogs in, and I would never leave him in the car, so we do tend to not to be able to go to a lot of places, but it is worth finding the travel information bureau, who will give you a list of kennels that do do day rooms for them.

Agree with everything said above but also wanted to add that she'll love Fforest Fields theres some great walks from the site up into the woods. Our dog loved it there. We also found that if we've done a long walk in the day shes a lot happier to settle at night and doesn't  worry so much about whats going on around the campsite. She always barks at home if she hears someone outside but when we're camping she hardly makes any noise. I think they get used to the noises around the campsites quite quickly.

Are the walks obvious at Fforest fields or do you need a local OS map?

We're going in August with the 2 mutts and would be good to know what local walks there are

There is a little shop on the site where you can buy bacon, eggs etc and leave money in the honesty box and they have little maps in there showing the walks from the site. Its really nice. We'll definately be going back sometime as we didn't do as much walking as we would of liked because we were only there a few nights. We went to the Elan Valley when we were there which is really nice for walking. (The picture on your photo thread of us lost is taken in the Elan Valley so you'll need an ordance survey map if you go there!!)

A dog crate is a much safer way of transporting a dog in the car. In an accident, especially at speed, a harness can injure a dog.  It will also give you somehwere you can shut her in in the tent if the weather's bad.

If you get a crate now and put her bed in it, she will have time to get used to it befroe you go away. It will be like a den for her, she'll love it. Then when you put it in the car, she may be quicker to settle.

You can get covers to go over them, a lot of people find their dogs are calmer in the car in a covered crate as it's dark and they can't see out. It also keeps the sun off them. The best ones are silver, to reflect the heat.
