hi, ive just came back from download, the reason gas is banned is basically drunken people think its a good idea to throw them on camp fires that they start when drunk, not a good idea.
hex stoves are fine for boiling water but over four days there not to useful.
trangia's on the other hand are a godsend, i was there for about 4 days and used it a lot, even making chicken curry and rice and used less than 500ml of meths which was only £2.99 from b and q.

... Have a Trangia but it scares me lighting them!
Have posted this before so apologies in advance.
Handy hint for lighting Trangia burners.
Run some meths around the small rim, just below the burner holes and light this. It gets the burner up to operating temp. quicker than trying to light the meths in the centre hole and is generally neater and easier to do.
It's been a few years since I went to Reading festival, sad seeing as I now live there LOL, but can understand why.
Trangia, or similar, would be great. I carry Greenheat gel in the car for mine and the boil time isn't too bad. Greenheat also do stoves for the gel. They're very safe to transport.
They have been made by any number of companies, including burners made by Trangia, Svea, 3 Crowns.
One sure way to improve the performance of those ex-military sets is to use a genuine Trangia burner in them.
Lots of very good suggestions on here - thank you. I like the look of the Greenheat stoves, they sound like a safe, cheap solution. Any ideas for the cheapest place to buy these?
