Well done Dezzie for having the bottle to tell him.The thing is he could have been a nutcase and turned nasty, this why a lot of people will not say anything, especially with all the knife crime we read about.
You can never be certain how an individual will react when confronted.
I think there is a big difference in confronting someone and asking someone politely to turn there music down, yeah there are nutters but lets get a grip here they are not in a majority, most people are not going to stick a knife in you because you ask them to turn there music down!

I think each situation needs to be assessed for itself....its different approaching one person or a couple and asking them to turn their music down/stop singing/playing their trumpet...but the last two times i've encountered excessive noise its been large groups. The first time half a dozen tents pitched round a gazebo with a group of twentysomethings drinking, shouting and swearing from at least 6pm until 2am (we did have respite while they went to the pub from 8-11). The second time was a group of Mum's and kids, who went quiet around 11pm, only to start again sometime in the early hours, they woke me around 3am, and my daughter said she woke at 4am and heard them too.
Neither of these times did i feel like i could say anything...you just get this feeling that it would only make things worse.

At easter we were up at brucies cave when someone on the site decide to blast out coldplay at 1am. It was on the other side of the site so thought someone else nearer to the noise would say something. About ten minutes passed then the same person started playing a harmonica.

Eventually I had enough, got my shorts on and walked to the other side of the site and sacastically said to the man sitting in the entrance of his caravan, drunk as a skunk  "hoy Bob Dylan, can you keep it down some of us are trying to sleep". He apologised and that was it, no more noise. I saw him next day, and he apologised again.

Sometimes you have to say something!!!

Karlos,    I had exactly the same problem funnily enough with the same person by the sounds of it (was the caravan on the bottom field on the same side as the kids park by any chance?) I also had to go out and tell him to shut it and I got to the point that I told him if he didnt, I would shove his hifi somewhere the sun dont shine (Im quite a big lad, but not in anyway a threatening person though!). He did turn it down after that. Im surprised he hasnt been kicked off the site as the site manageress told me she had warned him before, but it was a nightmare and probably the reason I havent been back to Bruce's in 2 years. My kids absolutely love that site too, but the noise and the caravanners who liked to race their 4wds round the camping field at 2am drunk just was too much for me.

As for the guy at Ullswater, He was just oblivious to the fact he was annoying anyone - I think probably because those round about him were just letting it happen. It was no big deal, he was quite happy to turn it off and apologised. No harm done. What im putting across is - Dont put up with it - assess the situation, if you feel its too much to deal with, thats when you go to the campsite staff. In this instance it was enough to have a quick word and it was well recieved.

My OH is exactly the same. First sign of noise and she instantly gets annoyed.....and if anyone wakes her up in the middle of the night......

Hi Dezzie, I think it was the same bloke , second caravan up from the bottom of the tent pitch, same side as kids park, I think they call it the orchard area. Thing is I spoke to the bloke next day and he's a really nice guy when he's not had a drink.

I'd be the one telling the oh not to go over and say anything - but when he's rattled (which is a rare thing to be fair) thats it he'd be over - in a non violent way of course, thing is I don't think he always does weigh up the risks properly just sees red.

Sounds like it! that is ridiculous. The site should have dealt with him by now. The time he was playing his music when we were there, it went on till 2am. I was livid. Im more annoyed that the site continue to allow him to stay there though!

I have also stood up to nuisance neighbours which was huge for me as I hate confrontation. Our party of 4 (2 x couples) were at Woodhill in Norfolk for the weekend. Our neighbour was a single father with 4 children. He had a loud voice to say the least but when he started screaming (and I mean screaming) at his kids well, the whole site could hear him and he was screaming at them from the minute he arrived on Friday and all through Saturday. Anyway it was Sunday morning 8.00 and off he went again. He was so loud that my friend and I couldn't hear our own conversation. At 8.50 I finally had enough. As I stepped out from our tent I saw virtually everyone in the area standing looking at this mans pitch. I went over and said to him something along the lines of "Excuse me, would you mind keeping the noise down please? It's not even 9.00 on a Sunday morning and we have had to listen to you for nearly an hour" He went very red, apologised and shut up. As I left my OH was coming back from the pot wash and was amazed that it was me that had stood up to him. Come to that I was amazed I had too but I felt great afterwards.

Most noise doesn't bother me, it's just living noise, babies crying always bring me out in sympathy, dogs love to bark, people like to talk and laugh and most music is Ok.(rap is NOT music)

Two things though drive me nuts, guitar cumbaya group singalongs and snoring.

IMO there are 2 kinds of noise. 1.Natural unavoidable noise and 2.Antisocial avoidable noise.

1. being, snoring, babies crying, even some giggling and talking, burps and bottom burps too, kids playing - (you get my point)

2. being loud techno bass heavy music, drunken adults using abusive language loudly in the early hours, couples argueing publiclly - (generally anything that would offend and make you scared in anyway).

If you are offended by the any or all of number 1, then with the greatest of respect, camping is NOT for you. Each and all of these noises occur on the majority of campsites - even adult only ones. (especially the snoring, bottom burps etc).

If on the other hand number 2 offends then you are on the right track and there are many folks who agree. Lets make a stand against it.

And the way to make a stand isn't by hiding in your tent complaining about it.

Unless you're on your own with 3 kids and it's 1am, and the dozen or so adults have been drinking for at least 7 hours

There was no way i was confronting that.
