We do something simialr to Pigletandtigger.
We have a plastic lidded crate ( 18L Really Useful box, as it is tough and easy to pack as you can pack right up to the top of the box and the lid will still fit and is held securely.)
Into this go non-perishable basics that we always take, to save sorting it everytime, and ending up with mutliple packets of spices etc.. Basically (though it gets varied a bit depending on my mood):
Teabags, coffe + filters, jar instant hot choc, a carton of Soyamilk, A carton of juice, a careful selection of herbs and spices that we always use (curry spice, herbs, parika,chilli, a homemade mix for making morrocan cous cous)small bottle of oil, soy sauce, balasamic vinegar (!!), tabasco. Pasta + jar of sauce (first night meal), rice for one meal, tin of toms, maybe sweetcorn or peas, tube tom puree and Garlic puree, jar jam, jarchoc spread, peanut utter. custard sachet, Jamaca Ginger Cake, Chocolate, Baked beans or soup for a lunch, maybe Rice Pudding, Museli for a couple of days for me), a few mini boxes of cereal, pack of biccies + 2 tea towels.
With some perishables such as bread, butter,milk, eggs, some fruit and necessary veg it can get us though until at breakfast on the second morning. for a weekend I tend to stock up with extra stuff as necessary at home to save shopping whilst away unless we feel like it - but if we know there is a shop very near the camp we might not bother. for longer trips we take the box and the minimum to keep us going until we can shop.
The box is repacked after each camp, and stored in the pantry and so is ready to go for the next camp

We have tea bags, coffee, sugar, instant hot chocolate, strawberry milkshake mix, salt & pepper packed in our camping crates as essentials, with all of our other camping gear. We then have a small fridge which we pack with enough bacon, eggs, sausages and marg for a couple of morning fry ups. We take frozen mince, frozen milk, beers, wine and fruit shoots in the cool box. Our first nights meal is always pasta bolognese, made simply with the mince, a jar of sauce and some cooked pasta. If there's room in the fridge we top it with grated cheese for extra yumminess! We also pack in burgers and extra sausages for the second nights bbq, and bring along a loaf of bread and/or some rolls. We also take a bag packed with crisps and biscuits to snack on during the day. This stuff will keep us going for a weekend without needing to leave the site to shop. If we're away longer we then shop on day 2 for further bbq stuff, or quick meal ingredients. Another thing we like to have is crackers and different cheeses. Great picnic fodder and easy to squeeze into the fridge/coolbox.
