we have just got back from camping with a 6 month old (and 4 and 5 year olds). It was fine, luckily we did a trial run in the back garden which made us realise just how cold the baby got during the night!
Only problem is that if baby wakes in the middle of the night then you can wake lots of other people up as the noise carries...... we just fed him every time he woke up and that seemed to do the trick.

essential things we took were a pop up travel cot like this one (because our tent is not very big).

an inflatable baby bath which was great at bathtimes and a chair for him to sit at and keep out of the way - we had a folding one that acts as a booster seat but something like a bumbo would be the same.

go for it and try and have fun.

Didnt start camping until our youngest was nearly three and of all the daft things I've done, not starting sooner is probably the nearest I've got to regret!! So I'd say go for it,imagine the memories and stories you will have to tell them!

Took one at 4 months. Two years later stayed with friends in Wales as we felt 3 weeks was too young. Now we've got grandchildren and they all camp. DS who was taken at 4 months was hopeful that everyone would tell his partner that bringing their 2 week old would be fine over the Bank Holiday. He was very disgruntled when we all said NO! That is probably too young especially as the weather wasn't very good.

If babies crying in the night bother you then you should book up on adult only campsites.

a five month old will be easier than an older baby to take camping as he/she won't need solids yet. if you breasfeed then it is even easier as you won't need any sterilising equipment either! we have the nomad travel cot as i liked the idea of the baby sleeping on top of the sleeping bag (comes as an extra) for extra warmth. our baby slept in normal winter weight baby sleeping bag and we varied what we put on her under it depending on the weather, from a long sleeved vest to a velour sleepsuit with another cotton one on underneath!
it's also easier taking babies camping at that age as they don't move!

if you are breastfeeding , as said before, it makes life a lot easier and less stress all round.

if our little one wakes in the night, it takes a couple of seconds for me to roll over , pick him up and feed him. so only noise for seconds, and then minutes later he is back to sleep again!

we even take the nappy bucket, which we leave outside the tent back door, and use washable nappies! (we use terry nappies and waterproof wraps) we just rinse the wraps out and they dry in the tent overnight, the nappies, we make sure that we take enough to last (else upset other campers by using the camp laundry lol)

must say that the baby sleeps really well in the tent, with all the fresh air he is exhausted!!

also took a tip from another ukcs member (cant remember who) and take 2 dog stakes and tie a long rope taut between the two, loop over the harness reins and let bubs crawl up and down outside the tent to his hearts content!!

id say "go for it !" its fab!!

camping with a baby is so easy, but it's that inbetween stage when they start crawling or walking badly until they are properly walking which is not really all that compatible with camping - from about 7m ish to about 12-14 months ish.

I never take a travel cot, just use a baby sleeping bag and dress the baby appropriately, with easy access to blankets through the night to throw over, and I sleep right next to the baby (preferably not on an air bed as it's quite easy to catapult babies that way!) so I can keep an eye on temperature whenever I wake up, and settle them quickly. And wear lots of layers on your shoulders if you are breastfeeding as it can get quite cold otherwise!! I wrapped my shoulders up in a pashmina last time we camped and that was August!! My legs were lovely and warm in the sleeping bag though.

And a highchair is a definitely useful thing when they start getting old enough to be able to use them properly (not till about 7 months or so, they get bored too quickly otherwise).

A far cheaper 'baby bath' is one of those kiddie inflatable boats from a pound store (although I must admit I didn't see them in Poundland this year). Apart from being dirt cheap, the inflated bit around the edge is great at supporting the baby's back once he/she can sit up (not that I am advocating leaving them unsupervised like that!!!).

The IKEA highchairs are great for camping as the legs just come off, leaving the seat much easier to pack, and they are amazingly easy to clean as there are no corners to catch the food.

250Less than £11 and you can also get a removable tray to go on them.
