Could it have something to do with the amount of electricity used?     A kettle/hairdrier etc is only on for short periods of time, but a heater may well be on for hours, using a large amount of electricity.

I know that some people will be paying for an EHU, and hardly use anything - we paid £3 a night recently - to run our fridge, and lighting last thing in the evening - oh and the odd charge for the mobile phones.      Everything else was gas - including kettle, and the fire which was needed a couple of times.

That was my point on the previous page. The comment following my observation was not being able to make a profit, well by charging for EHU the sites are making a profit whether it is metered or not. I bet I don't use £3 a day even with the fan heater.

Could it be a fire risk in a tent?

Mine switches off if it's not flat on the floor, but possibley. But then I think the alternative, ie a gas flame might be a tad more risky!

I dont really agree with the heater ban at some sites. Bernie - I've been to Bruce's and noticed this rule. We always take a small gas heater just incase anyway, but I was a bit miffed at my walk to the toilet block to see caravanners sitting in thier awnings with 28 inch CRT tvs and lamps etc, whilst we were sat shivering in our tent wondering what the hell we were paying for EHU for!   If they want to make rules like this, then they should really be more aware of what other appliances use a lot of the available current. I've not been back to Bruce's because of this rule and wont be until they justify it by banning all types of campers from using their high drain appliances. Some of the "semi permanent" vans on that site are using more appliances than some have in their homes. Where is the logic in that?   If they were a bit more fussy about the antisocial "campers" in the semi permanent vans that party into the early hours every weekend, then perhaps I'd respect the no heater rules a little more. It was the noisiest site ive ever visited - shame because its a nice site, spoiled by folks who should know better.

As i said before, we tent and caravan but at heart tent is best inc the people but dodgy health issues forces increased use of caravan from a comfort quicker point of view, the last time we where away in the van due to the expected increment weather and along with family members in tents we took the Wii game console & projector and screen giving us a massive 100" we had a right laugh with countless eyes peering into the awning and chuntering they`ve got an f.....g Wii all at a tadge over 1 amp, we didn`t need heating because of the activity of the various games, incidently that site we use often, is 16 amp and doesn`t have rules as to useage as each power point has its own circuit breaker affecting only the offending unit. And just as a rough guide to what energy each appliance uses 1000watts (1kw) divide by mains voltage 230/250 ish = 4 which is the amps 4amps, i think the old type of electric heater with the bars was 3000w like a lot of domestic kettles this equates to 12 amps so would certainly cause problems on a 10 amp pitch if used on full power, so just keep an eye what you have on together as its so easy to overdop it. god i do waffle on.

Has anyone actually asked this or any other site why heaters are not allowed ? We decided to not stay at this site because of its overall attitude and not just because of the EHU issue. We all seem to be throwing in what we believe to be the reason but it would be much better to find out why, the fact not assumption.

Flat screen TV's do not use a great amount of power once they are going, they do need a large surge of power to get them going momentarily but as long as all other appliances are switched off first this should not cause a problem.

We all need to understand that what one person likes in their van or tent may well be different to what we want but its their choice and if they pay the hook up charge then they can use the power how they want. However, if this means TV's and music being played too loud then that's a different matter. Mutual respect sadly does not seem to be a concern to some people but that should be dealt with more firmly by the site manager in my opinion.

Now I can not claim to be an expert on EHU as we have only just ventured into this world, but I am surprised to read that on some sites one unit can trip the entire park or at least an area. The site we have just returned from in the New Forest had seperate power supplies with its own circuit breaker for each hook up. Do I understand then that some sites use a common supply ? If this is the case how can the level of supply be calculated or controlled too each pitch ?

If this is the case then I would suggest that these sites need to invest in some updating of their facilities as what they are promoting is not complying with the level of service that we are purchasing. If we pay for a supply, be it 10 amp's or more then that is what we should get and then it is down to each pitch to control their draw on the supply to ensure it does not exceed this amount.

Have I understood this correctly or have I got the wrong end of the stick here ?

Gary

...what about the cost of installing, upgrading, maintaining and safety checking an EHU set up? I doubt any of these things are cheap and IIRC a site owner the other day said that they are charged commercial rates for EHU supplies which are higher than ordinary domestic supplies.

Went to Henley a couple of weeks ago and yes they do not allow electric heaters so i took a small gas fire. I noticed when i was there for a week nobody seemed to check as i saw campers using there electric heating.

Maybe its nothing to do with the technicalities.

Maybe the site owners are 'green' thinking and believe that heating a tent is a waste of the earths resources (whether you are paying for it or not) and morally are not in favour of it?   Perhaps they feel that a caravan at least has some insulation?

IMO its their site, they make the rules and if you don't like em you vote with your feet.

We stayed at a site recently and weren't told about the no fan heater rule until we arrived.  After checking that the electric wouldn't be tripped we decided to use our electric fan heater anyway albeit for short periods - come on whose going to know unless they get a warrant to search my tent?  They had so many rules and regulations that every single person on the site must have broken at least one of them!!!
