I`ve never experienced the ground moving under my tent.

Seriously...no..the ones I`ve stayed on are a thin layer packed down over a membrane.Therefore, rock pegs are essential

One particularly wet week, when we broke camp the ground was so sodden under the membrane it was a bit like walking on jelly...but we hadn`t noticed this in the tent...try and imagine what that would have been like if it was a grass pitch

We got ours from the local camping shop and got loads with slightly damaged plastic thrown in free. I don`t think they`re too pricey.

Being lazy, we use them all the time with our delta pegs for the guys.......got sick of bending cheaper ones on hidden rocks.....false economy

Its hard to find sites with perfect lush grass - so when they do come along then its a blessing - as for me - I wont pitch again on any surface that looks like it could turn into mud - its just NOT worth it - ruins you tent - your gear - your gorundsheets - the lot - better to pirch on an artifficial surface if you cant finf a site so well managed that they avoid the dead grass sittuation.

So am I wrong to simply use the garden hose at home to remove all, (well most of ) the mud off my tent and then let it dry?  Does a bit of mud really matter?

The consensus seems to be pro-hard(er) pitches but I can't see the appeal.  Lying in my sleeping bag on my Thermarest on SIG on gravel sounds unpleasant.  But seeing the swell of opinion here - am I missing something? Anyone else slept on such pitches on a Self-inflater rather than a fat air bed or similar.

I've yet to encounter such pitches but worry they'll become more common?

Must admit I am slightly less concerned now, than when I asked the question at the start......
