Does a fleecy blanket on top of your air bed (under the sleeping bag) really make a big difference ? I've never ever done this myself but so many of you have mentioned it, I'm thinking it might be a very good idea.

I am seriously tempted to get a fatairic or similar but the pennies are a bit tight right now.

Yes , but a plastic or foil backed picnic rug on top of airbed is even better because it has an extra layer of insulation.takes up no more room , I got nice size ones that covered a double airbed cheap from aldi or lidl last year. about £5.99.

Hi posted the below in a thread re what to put under an airbed, but think it is a question to ask on this thread.

I know there are people in the airbed camp and some in the self inflating mattress camp. We've always used an airbed, and now starting to do more camping (I think as most previous trips were usually wild camping with a lot of beer we never noticed the cold! Just had the airbed and crappy sleeping bags.). we have noticed the cold. Last trip we took more insulation, roll mats, fleece blankets, airbed, fitted sheet, sleeping bags (still crappy!) and a duvet.

If we had a self inflating mattress, could we cut out a lot of this stuff? (and get decent sleeping bags) I think that seems to be our main reason for trying the mattress, so we have a bit more room in car!

However after reading this thread it seems that the mattresses take up a lot more room?

We also have a 3 year old, and we've taken his readybed, with a sleeping bag over it and he has jammies plus a fleecy all in one. He seems to sleep ok, and doesn't say he's cold, but would you think the readybed is ok? Think we may have to rethink his bed anyway as he always rolls out of the bed, any suggestions from other parents of toddlers?

I have be en reading all the messages and we are going away for the 1st time with the kids, we are going to buy 2 self inflating for us grown ups but for the  kids I am have bought a really really cheap fleece from IKEA today which only comes in one colour but was £1.69 so I am going to wrap the blow up beds in that,  put the sleeping bag on top and then a blanket on top of them, should keep them cozy. I am gutted that the fat airics are no more as I was going to get 2 2moro!!!!!

After my overnighter cold issues I'm seriously thinking of changing to a SIM but my limited experience of them wasn't good. When we camped in Canada I borrowed a SIM before we had out own stuff and I found it so hard like I could feel the ground threw it. Now I'm not sure how good a mat it was but doubt it was an expensive one. My worry is, spending all that money on a decent mat to find I don't like them, yet there's not point, I think, in buying a cheaper one as probably the quality isn't as good.

Space is a bit of an issue it would only be one for me, hubby loves his army camp cot..lol.

Jackie, I have had the same thoughts but the answer is there are no Fat Airics second hand on ebay! so they must be liked. So I have brought a 10cm Gelert one, not cheap not too dear, if I cant get on with it it can go on ebay so I wont loose too much.

Jackie if you can get to a Costco, buy there's to try. They have a money back policy if you aren't happy with anything you buy from them.
