Cooked under the canopy attached to the tent last year. With 3 young kids running around, and snippets I've read on here, I have just bought a Gelert canopied wind break to cook under for this year.

Sunncamp canvas tent with kitchen area, so on poor days I cook in that area, otherwise its outside as thats part of the camping life.  I ALWAYS ensure at least 2 full buckets of water next to me wherever the stove is and ensure kids and OH's are well out of the way !!!!

Hi ybyatt.

You ask about extra charge for utility tent, my understanding is that sites only charge for additional tents that are, or can be slept in, utility/kitchen tents are to be viewed as an extention to the main tent, and to be viewed no differently than an annex or sun-canopy, so is part of your unit, so long as it does not go beyound the boundery of you pitch, ergo no extra charge, I have never told a site that I have a utility tent, and I have never been charged, a rule I often apply is, that it is better to beg for forgivness after the event, than ask for permission first, although this is not the case when buying a villa in Spain lol!.

Last year we cooked under a gazebo with a wind break around it but neither of us liked having to take the gazebo down when we went out.

This year we have bought a utility tent and we used it for the first time at the weekend. It was really lovely to be able to cook out of the rain even when the wind was blowing.

Scariest thing I saw this weekend was a couple who had a BBQ in their tent! They found a couple of bricks on teh site so set up their disposable BBQ on the SIG and lit it. I spoke to the woman in the loo block and she said the whole tent was smokey - I wonder why! LOL

Meant to say that the site we stayed at last weekend didn't change for our utility tent but some of the sites I have looked at for the summer do charge for them.

I cook in my tent  when it's raining, but preffer to do it outside. A big pan of water on standby is a must for me and cooking on a low heat. Be very careful frying except at a very low heat and cover with a spatter guard. If gently simmering there is  far less risk. Obviously there is more risk attached and its down to personal choice and need of circumstances.
