this was our first trip to spiers, so not sure about the difference since the refurb. They do allow BBQs (at least no one told us off for having one!!) but not sure about fire pits. Staff were v friendly so I'm sure if you give them a ring they'll help you.
Mosquitoes
There is a spray called Vape Open Air which eliminates midges and mosquitoes to protect your outdoor space, effective for up to 8 hours.
Believe me it does work.
Johnson & Johnson used to sell a product called Yardguard. Used to stop biting insects wasps etc in the area in which it was sprayed outside for about 4 hours. They stopped retailing it in the UK. When I rang them to ask why I couldnt buy it anymore they said they had been inundated by calls asking why it was no longer on sale but had no plans to retail in the UK again. You can still buy it in USA. We still get it when in the USA when there because it works.
We were bitten loads by midges one year, all of us except those who have hayfever and who were taking anti-histamines! So that might be an option - some of the counter anti histamines and start taking them a day or two before you go....

I had tried everything for mozzie bites but nothing worked, then I got badly bit in bulgaris and legs got infected, when I came home had to go straight to hospitala lovely doctor there told me he went to africa volunteering and he used citronella oil, lemongrass oil 5drops of each in a 250mls body lotion I now use it all the time no bites it has been wonderful for me
I feel his pain! For the last couple of years i've suffered terribly with insect bites. Then they swell up and get infected which is just no fun at all. GP's advice was all your doing, antihistamines, cold/ice etc to take down the swelling.
I've tried the skin so soft that does seem to work but when we're out bike riding now I use the Go Outdoor life systems Deet. Seems to work for me. Also eat Marmite and take a vitamin B! Every little helps!!!
Great thread! I'll be packing some citronella oil and giving that a try! Don't really like to use Deet.

Horsefly last week swollen from knee to nearly ankle! Mosquitos itch for ever but don't swell as bad. Answer for me is double dose of anti histamine (hay fever tabs) for a few days, hydrocortisone cream and ibruprofen.
Cant help with what to spray on grass tho. I do find that deet works but dont think to use it in the uk!
While in the lakes last week I used Smidge for the first time - it was great stuff. It says it stops midges, mosquitos and horse flies.
I was out walking one day wearing shorts and had sprayed the smidge on. All was going well until a horsefly decided nothing was going to stop it and bit me through my walking socks!! Ignored my bare arms and legs I assume because of the smidge but was determined!!! Don't worry, I got him back!!
In the mornings with the midges I just put a bit of smidge on my face and arms and none came near me.
The dog was being harassed by the midgies as well but I didn't like to put anything on him so just squeezed a slice of lemon into my hand and wiped the juice around his ears and he was left in peace as well.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
