I think some couples just want to be left on their own especially if it's a short trip. We usually (!) want to enjoy our own/each others company if we're taking a short trip in the middle of a busy period. However, if it's a longer holiday then we're quite happy to get friendly with other campers and hang out a bit. Certainly, I wouldn't allow other kids in our tent. My kids are not even allowed in our tent

! during the day unless there is a severe thunder storm or hail stones the size of footballs. It's a hard one, though. . .

Oh and about keeping in touch, there was a lovely family we met in France last year and I wish we had exchanged e-mail addresses. The thing is, you meet like minded people on your chosen campsite.

There is a big difference between adults meeting and getting on and childrens 'best friends' which are very transient.

Any child that is 'hovering' without parents in sight should be shooed imo otherwise you do end up being unpaid babysitters even if its just that you are indadvertently keeping an eye on them.

me and my girlfriend are both nearly thirty, havent been camping that long, been a couple of times. we dont have any kids so no real interaction with others campers yet. would be nice to have a chat but always seems a bit awkward to just start a conversation. we're off camping next week at westwood caravan park, so if you're there come and say hello!!!!!!. we're in the nice new shiney gelert horizon 6 in brown.

In some ways it's the kids that help adults to meet each other.

So if you don't have those little 'icebreakers' then the other way to meet people is when washing dishes. Or do what I do and forget the corkscrew and have to ask someone for the lend of one.

frome you are so right - we used to camp as a couple and liked the peace

now we have kids our choices are different, hopefully our kids will grow out of being sociable

It's one of the great things about Camping, also Hiking and Back Packing the people you meet and whilst not all of them but a lot of them are really great people,as per any friends some of them you will keep in touch with some of them you won't, some of them you will meet on a regular basis (at least I do with some of the hikers I have met)

E-mail is a fantastic way to keep in touch, and my kids are already hoping to meet up this Summer with some new friends they made at the beginning of this month.
