I use delta plastic for guys and the blue plastic (outwell ones) for pinning the sides. I tend to pick coastal sites rather than inland and the wind can be stronger and less predictable in these locations.
I have got rock pegs in case its really hard, and I have done my own bit of a test.
Last year we stayed at Shell Island it is very sandy as we camped in the dunes, on advise here I used the 12" long orange plastic pegs no problem.
This year again camped in the dunes and I tired the deltas which rob said would be ok in the sand they held surprisingly well for me because they are not very long. I thought in sandy stuff they would pull out without the depth.
Long rock pegs just worked lose within hours its just too sandy there for them.
Really its down to the soil conditions and I take both.
A lot of discussions on here about pegs and people saying they dont need this or that, its maybe not so criticle with a cheaper smaller tent. I think when you have been in a big tent, and its cost you your savings, in the wind you want to feel secure.
This time at Shell Island it did get very windy (again) and the site rapidly cleared. Met office website showed winds at 35-40 mph. Not nice at all.
I had to really secure the Monty and extension and did not sleep easy, fortunately we stayed with my sister who has a large motor home which we used to block the wind from the tent.
Next day I set about doing something better, I worked my way round the tent un-pegging one end and pulling it tight, then working forwards each section at a time stretching it forwards and outwards sideways. By the end the tent was about 6 inches further forward. Not a lot maybe over that length of tent but now the sides were taught (fostermum would be proud of it).
I had already in my spares kit some new sliders that I had not fitted yet
line-loks I changed all the outwell sliders for these, and what a difference. I pulled the guys tight I mean really tight which I have not been able to do before especially if the guys where wet. You could play a tune on them literally, they pinged! The loks do not work loose either we moved the motorhome out the way a bit and Monty stood strong no more flapping.

These are a cheap addition which improve a tent again, worth a try if you have a bigger tent with steel poles.
