I tend to be guarded with regards to offering advice.
What suits me may be unsuitable to others.
I'm a KISS Tenter (Keep It Simple Sensibly).

However, if someone requests my advice I'll get them to outline their requirements first. Then I'll be honest and tailor the reply based on my experience, or, if their requirements differ greatly, tell them politely I cannot assist.

After all, (IMHO) bad advice is worse than no advice.

Regards James

Then I bought a tent.

Hi

You gave what to me sounds like very good advice / something for them to think about.

You didn't frog march them to the cash desk and insisted they bought your suggested tent.

It's their decision whether they choose to take your advice.

I think you did the right thing !

Jen

I have offered advise to people like if you are camping with children think about a living area, where you can sit if the weather is bad.   Having been stuck in a tent with no living area, two small children and constant rain, we upgraded to a tent with somewhere to sit.

I won't advise on a particulat tent, as what suits one, will not suit somebody else - but only general stuff.
I will also tell people to make lists - and have given a copy of  my list to somebody else, which they were able to adapt, and found very useful.
