I see you've been off somewhere and the dog came through with flying colours so congratulations...

As I read through this my thoughts were that the dog was barking in the house...not as a territorial thing....but rather as a warning to you..."Someones about...better give the folks a warning" type of thing Rather than the crazed incessant yapping you can get from a highly strung or nervous dog...What lead me to that was the fact that she stops when you tell her to...Once shes got your attention..that someone is around and you acknowledge her warning she probably thinks shes done her job and you can deal with whoever comes to the door..

Was also going to say That being off somewhere diffrent in the tent(away from home) she might not have felt the responsibility to warn you so keenly..

I have only ever heard Meg(my older springer) bark about 8 times in her 8yrs with me. I think she  does'nt feel the need to vocalize that often so does not indulge..

Millie(1yr old) on the other hand has taken to giving one bark when someone knocks or approaches the door(which I dont really like but can live with) and I was a bit worried a few weeks ago on her 1st trip that she would be barking at everyone passing the tent....Never heard a peep out of her the whole w/end???

BTW these are only my musings on the topic Im no dog whisperer or trainer....

Jelboy.

Pretty much identical to what I would have said.

Our 5y/o GS cross is rather vocal when she hears someone approach at home, but when we're in the tent she only ever barks in response to other dogs on site, and even then it's a single "Woof!" and then she plonks her head down again. OH is convinced she's telling the other doggie to "Shurrup!"

our dog "fudge" is a rescue dog we have had him 8 years and we think he is about 10-11 we do not have a clue what happened to him in his first 2 years but cant imagine life without him
when anything comes within 20 yards of the house he goes mental i mean proper mental he is a big dog and can look quiet aggresive so we have to warn people that are new to our house

out on his lead he is a different dog altogether
so we did worry about him in the tent he has not made a sound yet people come and go kids run in and out and he just sits and watch's the world go by
when we get home he puts his mental head on again

Our two year old cocker, Cassie barks at home when in the garden if someone's walking past the fence, but doesn't bark in the house and never when we've been camping. She's been coming camping with us since she was 6 months and loves being with us all day, lots of walks and extra food from the bbq!!!

Best wishes Sam

Rich that does not count as your butler will be looking after the dog in the east wing so you wont hear it bark anyway
