Yes, you're right, I buy a new one every year and rinse it first out in case there's any factory gubbins on it. But I don't buy a new one every time I wash the tent tbh...I rinse and dry it out and keep it in a bag with the tent kit. I don't wash my car with a sponge (car wash instead) so there's no chance of cross contamination.
