We love the I.O.W...we have been every year for the last 5 years camping and even got married there this year whilst camping in June at Nothwood house in Cowes.

We have never done the portsmouth thing so thats an idea for next year, We usually stay at Adgestone C&CC near sandown but stayed at Thorness bay this year and had a great time and the weather was amazing too.

We love the picture of the sunset St Catherine's Oratory. Would love to see some more pictures of the site Old barn touring.

Congratulations on your wedding, how lovely!  We heard Robert Thompson from the Hambrough had a pop-up restaurant at Northwood House this year, did you manage to try it?  I'm glad you had the good weather, the wardens on our site mentioned they had had a long dry spell and were having to buy in food for the cows up the hill as their grazing was so poor.  I'm sure they welcomed the wet, though not so good for us obviously.  I will have to have a look at Adgestone and Thorness, while its nice to go to a familiar site it's good to try somewhere new now and again.

We went to IOW this year at end of August too.  Great place for a UK holiday - lots to do, lovely scenary and lots of plcaes to eat for families.  It was also not busy - no traffic jams at all and always easy to park.  Stayed at Whitefield Forest near Ryde - lovely site.  We arrived on 22/08/10 - that Sunday night had torrential rain (worst ever experienced in tent) and strong winds, with a repeat performance (not quite so bad) the following wednesday.  The last 9 or so days were great, weather really picked up and we had some good days on the lovely beaches. Our pitch looked exactly like the pic in this thread when we left - I felt sorry for those due to pitch on it the next day.

Hi Mrs Badcrumble, Thanks for the congrats, we didn't get to visit the pop up restaurant but had a beautiful wedding reception at The Woodvale Hotel, Princes Esplande, Gunard. It's a fantastic friendly public house with amazing food I can't recommend them enough. They have fantastic veiw across the Solent too, great for the sunsets.

Its a shame you had such wet weather, we had 16 days of wet weather during August 2007 at the Adgestone site, but it didn't put us off going back.

Love your photo of HMS Ark Royal.

I get to see that view twice a day, every day, en route to work & back home! It's gorgeous in the summer, but can be a bit wet & choppy in the winter months.

Not camped on the IoW, tend to do day trips - & I was commuting there too for 3 years, so got a bit 'Wighted out' - might try a trip next year in my new tent!

jfdiyes - what a fab view for a commute!  We were so chuffed to see the Ark Royal, she's absolutely massive!  I agree about being "Wighted out" as we've been to the same site the last 3 years.  However the Isle of Wight will be hard to beat, there is so much to see and do without having to drive for miles and miles, no motorways, no large shopping malls, no queues to speak of, even in August, miles of beaches, lovely clifftop walks, historic buildings, beautiful scenery, cream teas, seafood and the lovely slow pace of Island life.....I might have to reconsider "elsewhere" at this rate

Hi Andyfisher - we made a point of apologising to the wardens for the state of our pitch, not that there was anything we could do about it but we felt bad leaving it like that, same as you.  The weather was quite nasty wasn't it that Sunday night!   I was glad we hadn't camped over in the West Wight out on Military Road - fab views and we have been tempted, but very little shelter and I am a fraidy cat in the wind.  Glad you had some better weather and got some beach days in!

Waww Mrs Badcrumble.  Im loving those photos of IOW.  We are thinking of going there next summer and your report has certainly helped.  We are just undecided on where to stay as there is just too much choice!!  I was having a little chuckle to myself when you spoke about your packing up process and the "I forgot to remove the hanging wardrobe poles"!!!!  OMG we have been there and done that (much to my OH disgust as I told him to crawl back inside and fetch them!!).  Oh the joys.  A mistake you only make once

We stayed on exactly the same site. As you enter the site we'd have been one of the first tents you saw, except we left a few days before you arrived. My parents told me some campsites on the Island had to call the emergency services that weekend!

I have a feeling His Nibs will be reminding me about the poles next time, oh yes, you see I am usually right so he does love it on the rare occasion I slip up .  I  hope you go to the IOW at some point!  It's well worth the journey from Lancashire for us.  We drive down overnight and get an early ferry on a Nightflyer ticket, around £50, as opposed to £116 in the daytime.  That's 3 days pitch fees saved so worth the bother.  We get the 9.30 pm ferry back and get home around 2.30 - 3 am, the roads are much quieter.

If you have Tesco clubcard points then these can be used on Wightlink ferries.

I know - I said as much to His Nibs while we were getting on the hovercraft, but Portsmouth is a bit far for a day trip from home.  We will definitely be back to the IOW at some point, it's a little gem of a place!

Mrs Badcrumble

the state of your pitch is eeeewww. Ours was still grassy but yellow. The site had quite long grass which coudn;t be cut due to the ongoing rain. The grass looked lush outside the tent, until you walked on it and discovered it was actually ahuge puddle. Site we was on only had about 3 inches of top soil so nothing was draining away. Bent several pegs too!!  Yes it may well have been 2007, I'd have to dig the photos out to be certain.

Site has now gone all static.
