Er, yes, we were camping in that.   The door is around the other side but - if you look closely - you'll see the smoke coming out of the wood-burners' chimney.

Camping in winter is one thing but let's be sensible here. . . . . . .

Ciao,

As an aside, it seems a shame that you can't just input a photo (maximum of, say, 30k) straight into the box.

Webmaster?

Ciao,

Ian.

That would be very handy. I usually use my profile. Upload a picture to it and copy and paste it to a reply page whenever I need to post a quick pic.

The problem with this though, is that the pic in the posting changes or disappears if I delete it or change it in my profile, but by then the thread it was in has usually dropped off the bottom of the page anyway.

Well done, Yoda - having the place to yourself and the pick of pitches is one of the many joys of off-season camping.

As mentioned above, a group of us enjoyed a fab mini-meet last weekend (12-15 Nov). The temperature dipped below zero overnight but it was glorious to wake up to the dawn haze lingering in the valley and the beautiful sheen of frost-covered grass.

The tricks are preparation and layers. Make sure you plan carefully and make a list what to bring. Also, watch the weather forecasts like a hawk.

The 'layers' part applies to both clothing and bedding - it is easy to shed a layer when you are too hot but impossible to put one on if you have forgotten to bring it.

Most of the people on the mini-meet used EHU (electric hook-up) which is a boon (for lighting as well as heating) but a few of us camped without EHU and we all survived! The evenings were spent in front of campfires and everyone had brought plenty of warm clothing.

I can't speak for others but I slept very soundly and warmly in my unheated tent by use of layers. My bed was two SIMs (self-inflating mats) with an ordinary foam sleeping mat under the SIMs. I slept in two summer envelope bags, one inside the other, with a third bag opened out as a duvet on top. In fact, that lot proved a bit stifling so I cast off the top layer. For sleepwear, I had a long-sleeved thermal top and thermal leggings. Oh and really thick thermal hiking socks!

I had with me a proper winter mummy bag just in case and took extra clothing in case it rained.

Anyone contemplating winter camping should not be put off by thinking they'll be too cold at night. Just take lots of good-quality warm clothing and plenty of layers.

That really does sound quite incredibly uncomfortable!

Think I'll stick to one sleep mat, a four season sleeping bag, not a lot of clothes (ie, none - and sorry about the mental picture there) and the wood burning stove in the lavvu!

Can I ask, Sceptical Camper, what thickness the two SIMs were?

Just wondering if two thin mats would equate to one thick one in terms of warmth; would two 3.5cm mats be as warm as/warmer than one 7cm mat, for example?

(Why am I reminded of The Princess and the Pea when I read about your sleeping arrangement?  )

Au contraire, Bimblers, it was quite incredibly comfortable! The two SIMs were not only as soft as a feather bed but they ensured good insulation from the ground cold. Personally, I find sleeping in an envelope far more comfortable than the constriction of my mummy bag. Regarding nightwear. to each their own - some like thermals, some like PJs, some like a nightshirt, some like naked, some like satin babydoll nighties with lace trim - and that's just the blokes.

To answer your question armchaircamper, one of the SIMs is 3.5mm, the other one is 3.8mm. I think when it comes to insulation, it depends more on the quality and density of the foam than on the thickness or whether there are two layers. I use two SIMs for softness and cushioning rather than for warmth - I suspect that at last weekend's temperatures a single foam sleeping mat plus one SIM would have provided adequate insulation.

To each their own, of course. But as I said, layering is a long-established principle for keeping warm in cold environments. See, for instance, these links:

It's funny how we all do things differently proceeding towards the same goal of warmth and comfort.   Last January I did a snow camp in a small tent. Under the groundsheet was a layer of closed cell foam as used under laminate flooring. Then 2 Thermorest SIMs and a winter down bag with a fleece liner. Night attire was thermal long johns and long sleeved top. I posted a little video of the trip here, it is mostly night time but stay with it Snow camp video

I was warm enough and the kit was all carried in the rucksack but............... it just was not as comfortable as our usual camping bed. That is a lightly inflated airbed, topped with 2 good quilts then sleeping naked under a winter down quilt - absolute bliss . Without the quilts underneath airbeds are really cold (for me).

So following on from the Biblers we have now got hold of one of these

From camping solutions, it seems to work as described and we are now looking at the best method of locating it in the tent and managing the flue. Really like the idea of being warm in the winter tent without EHU. For me wood fire provides a different kind of heat, more likened to sunshine

p.s. Scep - I think you meant to state the thickness of the SIMs in centimeteres not millimeters

ooh, let me know how you get on with the frontier stove!

It's not the stoves so much that cost a fortune, it's the flue and 'gubbins' that you need as well

Val I reckon if you have a tipi or any tent with a top vent it shouldn't be too much of a problem. This thread really kindle my interest - Song of the Paddle It also quotes the original prices paid last year and earlier this, price quoted now is about £130. I think that as they have been made in China and have been bought here in large quantities for relief work they should be far cheaper than that. However it maybe that the company supports the relief work so then it is really reasonable and still is compared to others on the market.

My Frontier stove seems to work just as should. I've just been trying it outside to preheat it and get the smell away that occurs when a fresh painted stove is first used. A couple of points - it lighted up easily with dry wood that we use for our log burner (Stovax) at home. Even though the flue is only just over 2 inches diameter there was remarkable 'draw' with all the sections in use. This bodes well for use in the tent as it will keep escaping smoke to the minimum, lets hope it's not just todays conditions.

I'm hoping to use it in the Eldorado tent with a flue exit to the side of the door. The latest idea is to get some flexible vehicle exhaust pipe from a motor factor to route the flue through a verticle wall (shouldn't be too expensive) and a standard silicon flue gasket to protect the cotton. The outside flue would then need to be supported by some sort of pole I think, ideas appreciated.

In use the stove seemed to put out a lot of heat so it may be case of leaving the door partly open or just using it in the Bear Lake, we'll have to see. Great fun just in the planning I reckon

First lighting
