we enjoyed takeing my sons two puppies that much last summer that next year we plan to take our two big german sheppards with us rather than leaveing them at home with a dog sitter, haveing the two dogs with us last summer made our holiday fantastic so next year we dont want to go without the dogs so my duke and susie are comming with us, mind you got to bribe the daughter to bring them to us in her car as we have no space in ours once were loaded up with camping gear, we only just fit my son in the back seat lol.
I went camping for the first time in August, on my own with my Westie. He can be a bit yappy and I had the same worries as you have now. To be honest, he was not bad the first time and now that I've been away a few times, he has got used to the camping thing and loves it. He is outdoors all the time for a start and he loves that. Think that he is so worn out by the end of the day he sleeps very well in my tent. I am still doing the odd night mainly because the sites are quieter, less stuff to bark at and hopefully by the time of busy periods he will be better behaved. I tent to pop him into the car when I nip to shower block and throughout the day I use one of those corkscrew things into the grass. When the weather heats up, not sure what I will do as the car will be too warm to leave him in I think. So not sure how I get my toilet breaks? The car muffles any barking. The worst part is when we arrive at the site. He just goes nuts and barks a bit when I'm sorting out the tent. Think he is just excited. I tend to mention to the site office that he will bark on arrival and toilet breaks just incase anyone complains, he does settle. I am going to get one of those wind breakers to see if that helps next year. Only one way to find out, just go. Oh and I got mine used to the tent in the garden first. Good luck and enjoy.
our springer barks at anyone going past or getting too close and wouldn't really settle. We got 3 windbreaks and put them round the front of the tent to enclose it. He is really chilled out now he has his own "garden". He is no trouble at all, lies down and goes to sleep. I'd try that, mind you, we never leave him on his own in the tent.
