Safeway, when away in the van/FC, we have one of these inside the unit. One refill and one set of batteries last all summer.

When out and about we use this stuff. One 50ml bottle will last me two seasons.

But yes, occasionally one little blighter will find a place I missed or I will forget to put on some Stop Bite and get bitten. But as I said previously, Piriton soon takes away any ill effects from a Midge Bite.

I know this will sound a bit odd, but trust me it works. I used to work outdoors around forrest areas and lots of water (Keilder Forrest) and was given this tip from an old hand when I first started working there and can vouch that this really works.

Eat lots of bananas and wear blue clothes.

Trust me it does work!

Well there we go now. All I need to do is eat lots of bananas and garlic and wear blue clothes.

Oh, and keep away from trees lest my other banana & garlic eating mates who probably have a pair of long incisor teeth, will come flying oot tae get me.

But seriously -  check out the guys working for the water companies and think about the stuff they have to deal with. Imagine the flies it attracts in the summer. There is a phrase used by them to distingush which colour overalls to wear on different works.

"Green for clean - blue for poo!"

and I bet most people would associate blue with water?

Preferring to keep most of my baw bees for the finer things in life like CP fees and curryoots when away in the camper, a bottle of Stop Bite at £4.99 that will last me for two seasons is by far the best deal I have come across on the anti midge scene.

As to what attracts or dispells Midges, it is of interest to note that the bate that is used in Midge Eater Machines is a chemical that mimics the breath of a horse. Midges are far more attracted to Horses than they are to Humans.

So if all else fails, take a Horse for a walk on a long lead.

 After having a severe reaction to midge bites  (my doctor thought i had chicken pox!!)

Was advised to start taking 1 antihistamine tablet a day from March onwards, will try it this year and see if it helps!  Doc did advise though menopausal women are more likely to get bitten!! something to do with hormones that attracts midges!!

Maybe then there is such a thing as a male menopause afterall!!
