Apart from all the H&S issues as already mentioned,
1. Make sure all your wood is dry and seasoned otherwise you will struggle to get the fire going and you will smoke the site out.
2. Chop (or buy) yourselve a bag of sticks these again must be bone dry and about 1/2" square and 6" to 10" long.
3. Arrainge the sticks in a criss cross pile in the fire bucket/bbq, use plenty.
4. Pour parafin/ turpintine (much cheaper than BBQ lighter fuel) over the sticks and light, once the sticks are blazing well add more wood starting with smaller diameter stuff.
If you use dry wood and start with small sticks it never fails. Once the fire is going well get plenty of wood on to build up a good ember bed, this is where all the heat is.
Safety notes, Never add liquid fuel to a hot fire even if it has gone out, the fuel will turn to vapour and explode.
Never use petrol its just too dangerous
I once saw a man running with his arm on fire after using petrol, luckily his wife managed to save the sausages
Have a bucket of water nearby and a bucket of damp sand or soil, the sand is good for damping the fire down without making a mess (which the water will do if poured on a hot fire)
Have fun.
