we use a little barrel/pot BBQ small enough to pack away under the seats large enoungh to cook for four (just) on. lid clips over and can be used as a smoker and also to keep sparks at bay when starting.  then late at night the grill and lid comes off and its a small fire pit to sit with your feet by. ideal and about £20. into the fourth season and its still going good. more often than not the lid gets clipped on and its lent to other campers to use for the evening once I have cooked my bit on. and wine/beer at times comes back with it, and a new contact.

I've just purchased the Jamie Oliver pizza/bbq/fire pit as on a deal in Argos....just love the idea of being able to do our own pizzas on a campsite!! Thanks for the tip of the log thing-a-me-jigs from B&M/Home bargains...am off to the shops....AGAIN!

It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.

Apart from all the H&S issues as already mentioned,

1. Make sure all your wood is dry and seasoned otherwise you will struggle to get the fire going and you will smoke the site out.

2. Chop (or buy) yourselve a bag of sticks these again must be bone dry and about 1/2" square and 6" to 10" long.

3. Arrainge the sticks in a criss cross pile in the fire bucket/bbq, use plenty.

4. Pour parafin/ turpintine (much cheaper than BBQ lighter fuel) over the sticks and light, once the sticks are blazing well add more wood starting with smaller diameter stuff.

If you use dry wood and start with small sticks it never fails. Once the fire is going well get plenty of wood on to build up a good ember bed, this is where all the heat is.

Safety notes, Never add liquid fuel to a hot fire even if it has gone out, the fuel will turn to vapour and explode.

Never use petrol its just too dangerous

I once saw a man running with his arm on fire after using petrol, luckily his wife managed to save the sausages

Have a bucket of water nearby and a bucket of damp sand or soil, the sand is good for damping the fire down without making a mess (which the water will do if poured on a hot fire)

Have fun.

Place we went to that allowed open fire tou hired the log burner for free but you had to buy their logs at £3 a bag. Every pitch had one nearly and was lush!

Make sure wind direction doesn't send embers onto someones tent
